In 2008, Barack Obama pledged to raise the minimum wage every year once elected, but the hourly rate of $7.25 hasn't increased since 2007. Low-wage workers now make far less than they did four decades ago. Last week Illinois Democratic Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. introduced the Catching Up to 1968 Act of 2012. It draws its name from the idea that the federal minimum wage would be $10.55 an hour now if it had kept up with inflation over the past 40 years. While the bill has about 20 co-sponsors so far, President Obama has yet to endorse it. We speak to longtime consumer advocate and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader. Watch/Listen/Read More U.S. soldiers have died this year by taking their own lives than on the battlefield. The Pentagon says there have been at least 154 suicides among active-duty troops in 2012, a rate of nearly one each day. We're joined by three guests: Kevin Hines, who survived a jump off the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and now counsels suicidal soldiers; Bonnie Carroll, co-chair of the Pentagon's Task Force on the Prevention of Suicide in the Armed Forces and president of the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors; and journalist Aaron Glantz, author of the book The War Comes Home: Washington's Battle Against America's Veterans |

North Texas Progressive Book Suggestion | The Price of Inequality: How Today's Divided Society Endangers Our Future By Joseph E. Stiglitz List Price: $27.95 Price: $15.92 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25. Details. BUY HERE The top 1 percent of Americans control 40 percent of the nation's wealth. And, as Joseph E. Stiglitz explains, while those at the top enjoy the best health care, education, and benefits of wealth, they fail to realize that "their fate is bound up with how the other 99 percent live."
Stiglitz draws on his deep understanding of economics to show that growing inequality is not inevitable: moneyed interests compound their wealth by stifling true, dynamic capitalism. They have made America the most unequal advanced industrial country while crippling growth, trampling on the rule of law, and undermining democracy. The result: a divided society that cannot tackle its most pressing problems. With characteristic insight, Stiglitz examines our current state, then teases out its implications for democracy, for monetary and budgetary policy, and for globalization. He closes with a plan for a more just and prosperous future.
Joseph Stiglitz: The Price of Inequality Noble Prize winning, and highly influential, economist Joseph Stiglitz explains why our economic system is failing most Americans.READ MORE

| Frank Rich: Nuke 'Em Why negative advertisements are powerful, essential, and sometimes (see "Daisy") even artistic. | Barack Obama has made his mistakes as a politician and as a president, but here is one thing he indisputably did right: pummel Mitt Romney with a volley of attack ads once Romney sewed up the Republican nomination. Obama was playing by the rules, honoring historical precedent in both parties, and pursuing the one must-do task before him in an election year (winning). And yet from the blowback that erupted once his Bain ad hit the fan-from his own camp, from the pious arbiters of Beltway manners, and, of course, from his adversaries-you'd think Romney was an innocent civilian under assault by a drone. What was everyone so shocked about? As far back as August 2011, Obama's political hit men were signaling the inevitable to ... Read on

Billionaires for the Ryan Plan at GOP Convention |
The Billionaires stand by the entrance on Houston Street, so delegates have to walk by the small crowd on their way to and from lunch. A few tell the Billionaires to get a job. Others, like the man in the Revolutionary War hat, linger by the door and watch. A woman in a Ted Cruz t-shirt takes pictures. "Can I get a group shot?" Counting the handbag dog named Dotty, there are nine of them. The men wear top hats; the women, shimmering dresses and feathery pink boas. One drinks water from a champagne flute. Another has hundred-dollar bills stuffed into his coat pockets. They carry signs that read "Wealthcare for the wealthy" and, "It's class war and we're winning." read on

STUDY: Fictional Characters Can Influence Real Life Actions | Hearing about others voting experience works ...
Ohio State University researchers have released a study about "experience-taking," the psychological term for the moment when readers find themselves "feeling the emotions, thoughts, beliefs and internal responses" of a fictional character when reading. One part of the experiment involved 82 undergraduate students who were registered to vote. They read different versions of stories about fictional voters coping with problems as they tried to vote on Election Day--some were written read more |
