Bill Moyers: Back With a New Series |
Bill Moyers, Truthout: "The lack of civility and common sense that has paralyzed our democracy, the vast economic and social inequality that sends both left and right raging into the streets, the corrosive influence of money in politics - we're in a tailspin with little hope for a course correction from our elected leadership or corporate-dominated media. The need for voices of reason, simple and eloquent, has rarely been stronger." Read the Article |
Democracy Now |
In his last State of the Union speech before the November election, President Obama defended his record addressing the financial crisis and called for greater economic fairness. He warned that Wall Street would no longer be allowed to play by its own set of rules. But the bulk of the speech dealt with the economy. We get reaction from Jared Bernstein, former chief economist and economic adviser to Vice President Joe Biden and past member of President Obama's economic team. Bernstein says that Occupy Wall Street "had a lot to do with" Obama's message of economic fairness. Watch/Listen/Read We're broadcasting from Park City, Utah, home of the Sundance Film Festival, the nation's largest festival for independent cinema. Over the weekend, we spoke with Robert Redford, the founder of Sundance. He's well known as an actor, a director, a producer, but part and parcel of who he is is an activist. We asked him about President Obama's decision last week to reject the proposal for the Keystone XL tars sands oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico. Watch/Listen/Read |

The Reactionary Mind: Conservatism from Edmund Burke to Sarah Palin By Corey Robin Price: $29.95 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25. Details BUY HERE Late in life, William F. Buckley made a confession to Corey Robin. Capitalism is "boring," said the founding father of the American right. "Devoting your life to it," as conservatives do, "is horrifying if only because it's so repetitious. It's like sex." With this unlikely conversation began Robin's decade-long foray into the conservative mind. What is conservatism, and what's truly at stake for its proponents? If capitalism bores them, what excites them? Listen to Sam Seder's great recent interview with Corey about his new book here |

Goodnight Democracy a new free book about Citizens United |
Two years ago, the Supreme Court's decision Citizens United opened the floodgates for special interest cash in elections. So why haven't we reversed it? It's because we continue to stumble over partisan divides-even when 80% of Americans think Citizens United should be overturned.Goodnight Democracy is inspired by the children's book Goodnight Moon ("goodnight kittens, goodnight mittens"-remember?). It tells the story of our threatened democracy in the wake of Citizens United, with so much corporate money tightening its grip on our politics. Everyone understands bedtime stories-Occupiers and Tea Partiers alike. Now, it's time to wake up and work together to reclaim our democracy.Goodnight Democracy is free to download, share, and remix. Death Penalty in Texas Panel 2012 SMU February 2nd |
Death Penalty in Texas 2012 -Panel Discussion with Exonerees Anthony Graves and Clarence Brandley and the Rev. Carroll Pickett, former death house chaplain Thursday, February 2 Southern Methodist University 306 Dallas Hall, McCord Auditorium, 7:00-9:00pm Sponsored by Embrey Human Rights Program, 214-768-8347, Download Flier.. Anthony Graves spent 18 years in prison, including 12 years on the Texas death row, for a crime he did not commit. In October 2010 prosecutors dropped all charges against him and declared him innocent after conducting their own investigation of the case. Clarence Brandley in 1981, while a janitor at a high school in Conroe, Texas, was wrongly convicted of the rape and murder of Cheryl Dee Ferguson, a 16 year-old student. Brandley was held for nine years on death row. After community outcry and lengthy legal proceedings, that eventually ended in the Supreme Court of the United States, Clarence Brandley was freed in 1990. Rev. Carroll Pickett is a Presbyterian minister who spent 15 years as the death house Chaplain in Huntsville. He gave comfort to 95 men before they were put to death by lethal injection. Rev. Pickett is the author of the book Within These Walls: Memoirs of a Death House Chaplain and his story was featured in the documentary At the Death House Door. He is now a strong opponent of the death penalty and speaks of his observations about capital punishment and the world of prison society. |

| The Austerity Debacle By PAUL KRUGMAN NY Times | Last week the National Institute of Economic and Social Research, a British think tank, released a startling chart comparing the current slump with past recessions and recoveries. It turns out that by one important measure - changes in real G.D.P. since the recession began - Britain is doing worse this time than it did during the Great Depression. Four years into the Depression, British G.D.P. had regained its previous peak; four years after the Great Recession began, Britain is nowhere close to regaining its lost ground. Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times Nor is Britain unique. Italy is also doing worse than it did in the 1930s - and with Spain clearly headed for a double-dip recession, that makes three of Europe's big five economies members of the worse-than club. Yes, there are some caveats and complications. But this nonetheless represents a stunning failure of policy. read on

Memo spoke of special session for Texas redistricting if 'bad' judges emergedd | By Maria Recio | McClatchy Newspapers WASHINGTON - During questioning in federal court Tuesday of the Republican state senator in charge of redistricting, a lawyer for state Sen. Wendy Davis, D-Fort Worth, revealed what Democrats call an explosive e-mail from state officials that suggested asking Gov. Rick Perry to call a special session of the Legislature if legal challenges drew "a really bad panel" of judges. At issue is compliance with the Voting Rights Act, or "pre-clearance," which the state has chosen to pursue with a panel of judges instead of the Justice Department. Read more here |
