The Best Movies About Miscarriages of Justice

rockwall

Hollywood relishes tales of villains, victims and heroes, so it is not surprising that movies about miscarriages of justice have long been a staple of the film industry. Like vintage Westerns, there are plenty of black-hatted bad guys (cops, prosecutors, prison guards), innocents crushed by the power of the State (prisoners and their loved ones) and the brave cavalry that rides to the rescue (volunteer lawyers, journalists and others from outside The System.)

In the last two decades, wrongful convictions have become a particularly popular subject of feature films and documentaries, prompted by the seemingly endless stream of high profile exonerations. A-list actors, directors and producers have jumped on the bandwagon to tell their stories. Despite the Hollywood firepower, however, the results have been mixed. Some movies about wrongful convictions have been stunningly good. Others, not so much.

Scott Olsen, U.S. Vet Wounded at Occupy Oakland, on Recovery, Protests, Iraq and Bradley Manning

For our last broadcast of 2011, we turn to someone who became one the faces of the global Occupy movement this year. Scott Olsen, a 24-year-old former U.S. Marine who served two tours in the Iraq War, was critically wounded after being shot in the head by a police projectile at Occupy Oakland. In a rare interview, Olsen joins us to discuss his life-threatening ordeal, his involvement in this year's historic Wisconsin and Occupy protests, the case of accused Army whistleblower Bradley Manning and how he too had access to similar types of information, and the U.S. withdrawal from Iraq. The War at Home: Militarized Local Police Tap Post-9/11 Grants to Stockpile Combat Gear, Use Drones

A new report by the Center for Investigative Reporting reveals that since 9/11, local law enforcement agencies have used $34 billion in federal grants to acquire military equipment such as bomb-detection robots, digital communications equipment and Kevlar helmets. Local police departments have also added drones to their toolkit. The American Civil Liberties Union has issued a new report that calls on the government to establish privacy protections for surveillance by unmanned aerial drones, especially of people engaged in protests. We are joined by George Schulz, with the Center for Investigative Reporting, and Catherine Crump, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties Union. Watch/Listen/Read

With Pre-Caucus Focus on GOP Race, Occupy Movement Steps Up Activism in Iowa

The Occupy movement is making its presence felt in Iowa ahead of the Iowa caucus, the nation's first nominating contest for the 2012 presidential elections. Demonstrators have targeted the Iowa Democratic Party headquarters and the "Obama for America" office in recent days, protesting measures being considered in Washington dealing with defense spending, a planned oil pipeline and jobless benefits. Next they plan to focus on Republicans who will be crisscrossing the state in the next two weeks seeking voters' support. We're joined by Hugh Espey, the executive director of Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement, a 36-year-old grassroots organization with some 4,000 members. Watch/Listen/Read

An Election Year Dawns Without Keith Olbermann

rockwall

Keith Olbermann, who came to Current TV this year to remake the channel and compete against his old home, MSNBC, is sitting out the biggest political nights of the season.

Despite being the biggest star on the fledging channel, Mr. Olbermann is not scheduled to anchor Current's coverage of the Iowa caucus or the New Hampshire primary in January. Instead, Current's other prime time anchors, Cenk Uygur and Jennifer Granholm, will be joined by the channel's chairman, the former vice president Al Gore, according to the channel's TV schedule.

Dallas-based Billionaire Calls Occupy Protesters "Imbeciles"

rockwall

In this story from Bloomberg, some of the wealthiest men in America defend themselves (presumably from the comfort of their immaculately decorated offices and private jets) against the unfair, heinous attacks of the Occupy movement and those pesky protesters who seem displeased by the widening disparity between the richest few and the folks worried about feeding their families. The CIA says there's more economic inequality in America today than Iran or India. Not too far in, there's this bit from Bernard Marcus, the 82-year-old co-founder of Home Depot:

"If successful businesspeople don't go public to share their stories and talk about their troubles, 'they deserve what they're going to get,' said Marcus, 82, a founding member of Job Creators Alliance, a Dallas-based nonprofit that develops talking points and op-ed pieces aimed at 'shaping the national agenda,' according to the group's website. He said he isn't worried that speaking out might make him a target of protesters. 'Who gives a crap about some imbecile?' Marcus said. 'Are you kidding me?'

5 Companies That Did Something Good for the World This Year

rockwall

While no company is perfect, it's good to know that at least a few for-profit entities did some good things for the environment and society this year.

Occupy Wall Street has us all thinking about the bad things companies can do - and rightly so, because often those things are very, very bad. (The 2008 financial meltdown, anyone? How about the ongoing foreclosure crisis?) But sometimes some companies take steps in a positive direction, and it's worth giving those efforts a look as well.

First, let me make one thing clear: a company's inclusion on this list does not mean it is outstanding in every facet of its business. Quite the contrary. But each of these companies has done at least some things this year that are worthy of praise.

Clear Channel Allows Progressives to Stay on Air in San Francisco, but Adds Glenn Beck to Line-Up

Green960, redubbed KNEW 960, to become 'home of misfit, or at least mismatched, toys', says one insider..

You might call it splitting the baby. Sort of.Progressive radio will be allowed to remain on our public AM airwaves in San Francisco, though with major schedule shake-ups, the removal of its popular progressive branding and several bizarre additions to the line-up, including far Rightwing extremists such as former Fox "News" phenom Glenn Beck in the place of what had been one of Green960's most popular morning shows.

Michael Moore | Let's Double Our Efforts to Raise a Ruckus

rockwall

"On December 30th, in 1936 - 75 years ago - hundreds of workers at the General Motors factories in Flint, Michigan, took over the facilities and occupied them for 44 days. My uncle was one of them.... I can think of no better way for us to honor the original Occupiers than by all of us participating in the Occupy Wall Street movement in whatever form that takes in each of our towns. We need direct action all winter long if we are to prevail."

MTV's 'Power of 12 Campaign Creates Fantasy Political Election Game

rockwall

MTV just unleashed Power of 12, a campaign designed to get 18- to 29-year-olds fired up about the 2012 U.S. elections.

Unlike previous campaigns - dubbed "Choose or Lose" since 1992 - the renamed initiative features a fantasy football-like gaming element in addition to MTV's traditional campaign documentaries, website and political news coverage.

"Fantasy Election 12" players will draft candidates competing for the presidency, U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, and then score points depending on how well or badly the politicians conduct themselves.

"In the way that fantasy football awards points when your players score touchdowns and deducts points when they throw interceptions, 'Fantasy Election '12 will reward candidates for exhibiting the behaviors voters deserve, and penalize politicians for behaviors that hurt our democracy," MTV said in an announcement.

Nobody Understands Debt

By PAUL KRUGMAN NY Times

rockwall

In 2011, as in 2010, America was in a technical recovery but continued to suffer from disastrously high unemployment. And through most of 2011, as in 2010, almost all the conversation in Washington was about something else: the allegedly urgent issue of reducing the budget deficit.

Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times

This misplaced focus said a lot about our political culture, in particular about how disconnected Congress is from the suffering of ordinary Americans. But it also revealed something else: when people in D.C. talk about deficits and debt, by and large they have no idea what they're talking about - and the people who talk the most understand the least.

New Year Resolutions ?

NourishingthePlanet | Going Green: 12 Simple Steps for 2012

As we head into 2012, many of us will be resolving to lose those few extra pounds, save more money, or spend a few more hours with our families and friends. But there are also some resolutions we can make to make our lives a little greener. Each of us, especially in the United States, can ...

Danny Schechter | On Occupying the New Year

Out with the old. I would say good riddance to 2011 even as I fear 2012 may be worse, given the financial trends, social chaos and political idiocy that we confront every day. Every time, I believe it can't get worse, it does. It seems so clear that the political system is moribund and paralyzed - and the economic system may be in worse shape. The year...

Court finds Texas beer rule violates First Amendment

rockwall

Texas brewers can finally call a beer a beer. They can also tell folks where to find their beers and their ales, as well as their malt liquors. Ruling in favor of plaintiffs who asserted that some Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission rules were unconstitutional, U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks said the state was effectively forcing brewers to lie about their products

Inside The 1 Percent's Texas Enclave

rockwall

Howdy from Highland Park, where taxes are low, the gun store's booming, and donations to the GOP are way, way above average.

At a strip mall clogged with Ferraris and fashion boutiques, Beretta Gallery salesman Chris Cope shows me a framed photo of one of his best clients, an oilman posing next to a bounty of elephant tusks. In addition to selling massive safari rifles, this high-end Italian weapons emporium in the Dallas suburb of Highland Park supplies $130,000 Imperiale Montecarlo shotguns as well as petite .22s and chic, lockable handbags to conceal them. All told, it sells more firearms than any other Beretta outlet in the world. Last year, the store presented George W. Bush with a $250,000 shotgun engraved with the presidential seal, a picture of his Scotty dog, and "43" on the lever. The gun, which required more than a year to assemble, was a thank-you from Mr. Beretta for a military order of a half-million pistols.
