Cheney: Protests "Crazy," Obama "A Train Wreck" |
This is from D Magazine: Some interesting points here : He admits that he and Bush were from the same state, which made the 2000 Republican ticket unconstitutional. I knew they lived down the street from each other in Highland Park but they got away saying Cheney was from Wyoming. He also had to have a book signing in a private home ...because in Dallas he would have had lots of protestors. Cheney: Protests "Crazy," Obama "A Train Wreck" Former Vice President Dick Cheney may be thinner these days, outfitted with a permanent heart pump, and clad in two kinds of shoes due to a leg problem. But he's still as bluntly outspoken as ever, taking aim at President Barack Obama, his old nemesis The New York Times, and the Occupy Wall Street movement during a Dallas visit flogging his new memoir, In My Time. read on |
Democracy Now |
"The moral clarity of this movement is what I think has moved people to get up and walk and be in motion," says Katrina vanden Heuvel, editor and publisher of The Nation magazine. "And what's so interesting to me is-I was here last Wednesday for the march to Foley Square-that so many groups, which have been trying to get some energy, are finding the spark in here and coming together." Watch/Listen/Read |
Journalist and author Jeff Sharlet has spent days at the Occupy Wall Street encampment watching the movement grow. "This is the most incredible display of political imagination I have seen in my lifetime," said Sharlet, author of the book "C Street: The Fundamentalist Threat to American Democracy." Watch/Listen/Read As the "Occupy" movement expands from the "Occupy Wall Street" protest in New York City throughout the United States, we look at its historical significance. "This is an incredibly significant moment in U.S. history," says Dorian Warren of Columbia University. "It might be a turning point, because this is the first time we've seen an emergence of a populist movement on the left since the 1930s." We also speak to Firedoglake blogger Kevin Gosztola, who has been reporting from the occupations in Chicago, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Watch/Listen/Read |

Debt: The First 5,000 Years By David Graeber List Price: $32.00 Price: $18.59 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25. Details BUY HERE Before there was money, there was debt
Every economics textbook says the same thing: Money was invented to replace onerous and complicated barter systems-to relieve ancient people from having to haul their goods to market. The problem with this version of history? There's not a shred of evidence to support it.
Here anthropologist David Graeber presents a stunning reversal of conventional wisdom. He shows that for more than 5,000 years, since the beginnings of the first agrarian empires, humans have used elaborate credit systems to buy and sell goods-that is, long before the invention of coins or cash. It is in this era, Graeber argues, that we also first encounter a society divided into debtors and creditors.
Graeber shows that arguments about debt and debt forgiveness have been at the center of political debates from Italy to China, as well as sparking innumerable insurrections. He also brilliantly demonstrates that the language of the ancient works of law and religion (words like "guilt," "sin," and "redemption") derive in large part from ancient debates about debt, and shape even our most basic ideas of right and wrong. We are still fighting these battles today without knowing it.

Commentary: Obama's Texas swing was all about jobs, not votes |
Commentary: Obama's Texas swing was all about jobs, not votes There's no doubt that the 2012 campaign is under way, and you need to look no further than the stalemate in Congress to figure that out. The recalcitrance on the part of Republican members in particular has stalled meaningful legislation since Obama took office, a tactic aimed at making sure the president is defeated next year. read |

| The Seven Biggest Economic Lies by Robert Reich | The President's Jobs Bill doesn't have a chance in Congress - and the Occupiers on Wall Street and elsewhere can't become a national movement for a more equitable society - unless more Americans know the truth about the economy. Here's a short effort to rebut the seven biggest whoppers now being told by those who want to take America backwards. The major points: Tax cuts for the rich trickle down to everyone else. Baloney. Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush both sliced taxes on the rich and what happened? Most Americans' wages (measured by the real median wage) began flattening under Reagan and have dropped since George W. Bush. Trickle-down economics is a cruel joke. read on
