Rick Perry's political rise fueled by Texas' wealthiest |
En route to becoming Texas' longest-serving governor, Rick Perry has forged a network of reliable big-money donors who could help fuel a Perry presidential bid and would be in position to exert expanded influence on the national stage if another Texan lands in the White House. read on |
Democracy Now |
A new study of U.S. census data reveals that wealth gaps between whites and minorities in the United States have grown to their widest levels since the U.S. government began tracking them a quarter-century ago. White Americans now have on average 20 times the net worth of African Americans and 18 times that of Latinos. We discuss the center's study with Roderick Harrison, sociologist and demographer, and former chief of racial statistics at the Census Bureau. Watch/Listen/Read In the aftermath of the Norway attacks, we look at the work of Stieg Larsson, an author known less for his extensive research into right-wing extremism in Scandavia and Europe than for his international blockbuster books, published after his death and known as the Millennium Trilogy: "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," "The Girl Who Played with Fire," and "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest." As part of his passion to "counteract the growth of the extreme right and the white power-culture in schools and among young people," Larsson founded the Swedish Expo Foundation and edited its magazine, Expo. We go to Stockholm, Sweden, to speak with Larsson's lifelong partner, Eva Gabrielsson, about the research they did together before his death. Watch/Listen/Read Professional football is back in action after the resolution of a labor standoff that brought the National Football League to a halt for 18 weeks. The NFL players' union has voted to unanimously approve an agreement with team owners that makes several changes to promote player health and safety, including limiting of on-field practice time and contact, and increasing the number of off-days for players. The changes came about after a greater awareness of the toll football takes on players' bodies, one of many issues tackled in "Not Just a Game," a new documentary featuring Dave Zirin, sports columnist for The Nation magazine. Zirin talks about the film, the NFL deal, and the ongoing lockout threatening to derail the NBA's upcoming season. Watch/Listen/Read |

| Clean Elections Texas - Dallas, Roundtable |
Clean Elections Texas - Dallas, Roundtable 1, Session 3 will happen on Sunday, August 7, 2011 When: Sunday, August 7, 2011 4:00 PM La Madeleine (Near S.M.U.) 3072 Mockingbird Ln Dallas, TX 75205 Check it out → What is it? This will be the third session of this Roundtable series. We discussed our organization's nonprofit status and the IRS requirements and how these same requirements can impact election funding in the first two sessions. We will be turning to the issue of nonpartisanship in this session. What will we discuss at the Roundtable? We will start with the basics: our own organization; what is common knowledge about our elections system and its funding; what are the common misconceptions; what are some ways to be clear and nonpartisan in our efforts to educate voters, the media, and our representatives. Who should attend? Those who like discussion and words. It doesn't matter if this is your first time or you have come to other sessions. And we encourage you to come whether you have never heard about public funding of elections, are not sure you agree with the idea, or have been interested in this issue for a long time. We need researchers, house party hosts, website assistance, letter-to-the-editor writers, and membership building and support. These are just some areas for volunteers. Let me know if you want to help in a way not mentioned. Liz Wally President, Clean Elections Texas /214.821.2237 |
Don't let Rick Perry embarrass Texas |
Rick Perry hasn't appointed anyone to the Texas Department of Motor Vehicles board yet. The committee is still deadlocked 4 to 4 on whether the Sons of Confederate Veterans will have the ability to display the Confederate flag on Texas license plates. We need your help to stop this racist relic from being allowed on cars across the state. We will be delivering the hundreds of signed petitions to the Governor's Office August 5th and we want to make sure your voice is heard. We can't assume Rick Perry will do the right thing without your help. Rick Perry has a long history of promoting secession and pandering to the tea party. It is critical that we stand-up and demand he appoints a TXDMV board member who will not allow the Confederate flag license plate to move forward. Don't let Rick Perry embarrass Texas. Sign the petition. |

Friend "Texas Truth Rangers" facebook to help Track Down the Truth |
To get a jump on Perry, the Texas Truth Rangers are saddlin' up now to track him, and their Texas Truth Ranger facebook site is buckin' ready. And they need all good Democrats everywhere to "like," "friend," comment and share the site. They'd want good folks to send along articles, stories and comments about Rick Perry's screwups in Texas and his ill-fated presidential campaign. A few additional administrators would be great! Please get others involved and send along to the primary states, especially Iowa and New Hampshire! Check it out and help build it to take down Rick Perry! HERE "Well, after a little over ten years, the Texas Truth Rangers are saddlin' up for another ride trackin' down and telling the truth about a Texas right wing politician who lies endlessly to become president," grumbled old Jake. "The TTR rode hard and long to tell America the truth about George W. Bush's life and times in Texas. And now, another varmit, Rick Perry is running in W's footsteps. It is time for us all to research and broadcast the truth about Rick Perry's record in Texas so that America doesn't face another disastrous Texas president. Help us ride him into the ground."

No Rush: Cleveland to Get Liberal Talk Radio Station |
As blather emanating from the statehouse skews ever more conservative, it was only a matter of time before blather on our local airwaves started bending the other way. Frustrated liberal listener, Gary Richards has come to set you free. The Euclid radio veteran is set to launch WABQ-AM 1460, a progressive talk station due to ramp up next Monday, August 1. "You can move across your AM dial and hear Rush Limbaugh on 10 different stations," says Richards. "It's as if the conservatives have a corner on the market. But it seems there's a large unserved or underserved progressive niche here. There's nobody to tell their side of the story, and that's what we're here for." Kicking off will be a weekday-morning show hosted by Joe Cleveland (quite possibly not his real name), an on-air vet whose roots dig back to WENZ-FM The End, as well as stations in other markets. Following him will be a cavalcade of syndicated liberal talkers: Stephanie Miller, Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Bill Press, and Leslie Marshall, among numerous others cued up through the daylight hours and deep into the night. read on.

| The President Surrenders By PAUL KRUGMAN NY Times | A deal to raise the federal debt ceiling is in the works. If it goes through, many commentators will declare that disaster was avoided. But they will be wrong. For the deal itself, given the available information, is a disaster, and not just for President Obama and his party. It will damage an already depressed economy; it will probably make America's long-run deficit problem worse, not better; and most important, by demonstrating that raw extortion works and carries no political cost, it will take America a long way down the road to banana-republic status. Start with the economics. We currently have a deeply depressed economy. We will almost certainly continue to have a depressed economy all through next year. And we will probably have a depressed economy through 2013 as well, if not beyond. read on | |

A former State Department official, Hoh resigned in protest from his post in Afghanistan over US strategic policy and goals in Afghanistan in September 2009. His resignation letter has been cited as an Essential Document by the Council on Foreign Relations. Hoh was recently named the 2010 Ridenhour Prize Recipient for Truth Telling. After two tours of duty in Iraq and serving in the State Department in Washington, D.C., Matthew Hoh became the United States' senior civilian representative and political adviser in Afghanistan. He resigned five months into his contract, making him the highest-ranking U.S. government official to publicly quit over the war in Afghanistan. He joins us from Washington, D.C., to discuss whether the death of Osama bin Laden means the end of that war. "Everybody should be asking themselves today in the United States, if Osama Bin Laden was hiding in an upscale villa an hour or two drive north, northeast of Islamabad, then why did we put 50,000 troops in Afghanistan over the last two years?" says Hoh. When: Thursday, August 11, 2011 Time: Reception 6:30 p.m.; dinner and program at 7:00 p.m. Where: FunAsia, 1210 E. Beltline Rd., Richardson

Twitter for Newsrooms and Congressional Directory | TWITTER launches a tools/glossary page, Twitter for Newsrooms (#TfN): "We know you come from different generations. Some are native to the pilcrow [paragraph mark], others native to the hashtag. It's our goal to help creative professionals in news, TV, sports and entertainment use Twitter effectively." Here The U.S. Congressional Twitter Directory Via FearLess: "...Earlier this week, President Obama called on Americans to reach out to Congress regarding the debt-ceiling debacle. And a lot of people made their voices heard. The day after Obama's televised speech, the Capitol's switchboard was overwhelmed with 40,000 calls per hour and email traffic swamped congressional servers to a near halt. We searched online for an official Twitter directory for the United States Congress, but we couldn't find an updated and easy-to-use directory that contained links to Congressional members' Twitter handles. So we rolled up our sleeves and built the damn thing ourselves. Below you will find an alphabetical list of states with names of U.S. Congressmen and women. Each name links to the elected official's Twitter page. It's simple and efficient. Which makes it the complete opposite of Congress' ability to reach a compromise." Here
