BY ANDREW LEONARD As drought and wildfires rage, Gov. Rick Perry takes drastic action: It's time to pray After months of a historically unprecedented drought, devastating wildfires are raging across more than a million acres of the state of Texas. Democracy Now |
More than 10,000 people converged in Washington, D.C., this past week to mobilize around the issue of climate change at the Power Shift 2011 conference. Van Jones, a longtime environmental advocate and former green jobs adviser in the Obama White House, gave the keynote address. Watch/Listen/Read Last Friday, Texas reprimanded a psychologist who used what critics say were unscientific methods to examine at least 25 Texas death row prisoners for intellectual disabilities, two of whom were later executed. Democracy Now! first covered Dr. George Denkowski in January 2010 in a video report by Renée Feltz that accompanied her story for The Texas Observer magazine. For an update, we're joined by Texas Defender Service attorney, Kathryn Kase, and by Dr. Jerome Brown, the psychologist filed the complaint that ultimately resulted in Denkowski's agreement to stop evaluating people in criminal cases. Resistance to Fracking, Gas Drilling Rises on Unlikely Soil |
Kate Galbraith, The New York Times News Service: "Texans pride themselves on being the heart of the nation's oil and gas business. But even here, public concern about natural gas drilling is growing. On Wednesday, several dozen protesters marched through downtown Fort Worth, waving signs and chanting anti-drilling slogans that reflected concern over air and water pollution. The anxiety centers on a recently expanded drilling method called hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, which is now used in more than half of new gas wells drilled in Texas." A number of folks have asked for the Democratic Party of Collin County to organize a regular Friday night social event. The late great Molly Ivins used to have a "Final Friday" social event at her home in Austin almost every month, and we thought in response to local requests, and in honor of Molly as a progressive Texas icon, we'd start a "Final Friday" tradition here in Collin County. We'll have our inaugural of this official party event next Friday, March 29th, starting at 6:30 p.m and running to at least 9:30 p.m. (This is a casual come-when-you-can kind of thing, so don't feel like you'll miss the show if you can't be there right at 6:30.)This next week we'll hold it in the private back room at the Third Base Sports Bar & Grill in Frisco, but we'll rotate around to different parts of the county at different venues. (For our next event we have a location in Downtown Plano scoped out). We've been to this month's venue several times before, and it is across the street to the east from the Frisco Conference Center, where we held our 2008 County Convention. The restaurant is located north of Ikea on the western side of Stonebriar Mall. The address is 2390 Parkwood Blvd, Frisco, TX 75034 (click for map).(You can enter the back room of the restaurant from the side door on the south side of the restaurant.) An RSVP by email to social@collindems.us would be helpful, but is not required. Let's start a great tradition! In cooperation with Studio Movie Grill, Women in Film.Dallas announces a FREE screening of IRON JAWED ANGELS from HBO Films at the Studio Movie Grill (Royal location) on Wednesday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m. The film stars Hilary Swank, Frances O'Connor, Molly Parker, Julia Ormond, Patrick Dempsey, Vera Farmiga and Anjelica Huston and tells the true story of brilliant young activists Alice Paul and Lucy Burns who took the women's suffrage movement by storm, putting their lives at risk to help American women win the right to vote. IRON JAWED ANGELS is written and directed by women and is a celebration of women's achievements in both life and film. WIFD is also supporting women in our community at this event by participating in the Mothers & More Mother's Day Campaign 2011: Power of Purse. Tax Day, 'Farms' Owned by the Rich Provide Massive Tax ShelterBob |
Take Michael Dell, founder of Dell Computers and the second-richest Texan, who qualified for an agricultural property tax break on his sprawling 1,757-acre residential ranch in suburban Austin and saved over $1 million simply because his family and friends sometimes use the land as a private hunting preserve to shoot deer. Or take billionaire publisher Steve Forbes, who got more than a 90 percent property tax reduction on hundreds of acres of his multimillion-dollar estate in upscale Bedminister, New Jersey, just by putting a couple of cows out to pasture. They are not alone. All across the country, a huge number of America's wealthiest are tapping into agricultural tax breaks-and none of them have to do any real farming to qualify. read on

| Let's Take a Hike By PAUL KRUGMAN | When I listen to current discussions of the federal budget, the message I hear sounds like this: We're in crisis! We must take drastic action immediately! And we must keep taxes low, if not actually cut them further! You have to wonder: If things are that serious, shouldn't we be raising taxes, not cutting them? My description of the budget debate is in no way an exaggeration. Consider the Ryan budget proposal, which all the Very Serious People assured us was courageous and important. That proposal begins by warning that "a major debt crisis is inevitable" unless we confront the deficit. It then calls, not for tax increases, but for tax cuts, with taxes on the wealthy falling to their lowest level since 1931. read on

Rachel Maddow, the Nation, Daily Kos: Winners in AlterNet's Poll of Most Influential Progressives | Rachel Maddow, host of the 9pm (EDT) evening news and opinion show on MSNBC, reigns supreme as the most influential progressive. Or, more accurately, the media personality progressives love most. Maddow pulled well ahead of Michael Moore, who just nipped Comedy Central's Jon Stewart for the second spot. (In the first AlterNet poll in December 2009, Bill Moyers was voted most influential, with Moore second and Maddow third.) Keith Olbermann, who recently left MSNBC, ranked fourth, and the veteran newscaster from Democracy Now! Amy Goodman, came in fifth, according to more than 8,000 AlterNet readers and others across the web who voted in our poll. In the online magazine category, the Nation came out ahead of Mother Jones, with the Huffington Post finishing a strong third (despite selling itself to AOL for $315 million). TruthOut placed fourth, followed by Salon.com at fifth. (As host of the poll, AlterNet was not available as a choice.) The blog category featured the closest race, with the Daily Kos just beating out Media Matters for the first spot. FireDogLake finished third, followed by Crooks and Liars. Ezra Klein's Washington Post blog got number five. read on
