Rally for Dallas Sanitation Workers Workers deserve a living wage On April 4, 1968, Martin Luther King was in Memphis to support the sanitation workers there when he was felled by a sniper's bullet. On the anniversary of his death, let us honor his struggle by continuing to support a living wage for these essential workers. Forty-three years after King's death, Dallas's garbage is collected by workers making minimum wage with no benefits. Killing the Economy Without Even Trying by Errington Thompson |
Massive protests in Wisconsin are entering their third week. In my opinion, unions are in a battle with Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker for the future of the middle class. On one hand, Governor Scott Walker states that the state of Wisconsin is broke. In order to get their fiscal house in order, they must balance the budget and cut the size of government. Among the budget-cutting proposals, and the most controversial, is Governor Walker's proposal to end collective bargaining among public workers. On the other side of this titanic argument sit the Wisconsin unions. The unions have unequivocally stated that they're willing to take salary cuts but are not willing to give up their right to collective bargain. So the unions have met Governor Scott Walker more than halfway and yet we still have an impasse. Who's right? read on |

Texas news ..... |
Texas bill seeks moratorium on executions Clarence Brandley spent 10 years on Death Row for the slaying of a 16-year-old girl, a crime he didn't commit. Now, more than two decades after being cleared, the former custodian hopes to convince Texas lawmakers that it's time to abolish the death penalty in Texas - or least impose a moratorium on executions. Texas has executed more inmates than any other state - 446 since the death penalty was reinstated in 1976. Read on Stephen Pizzo | Proof of the Pudding The state of Texas has been a testbed for small-government conservatives who believe in the curative powers of low taxes and slashing government services. Just a year ago Texas republicans were pointing and laughing at liberal California's $25 billion budget deficit. What's that I hear now? Silence. No, not just silence, but embarrassed silence. Read on Texas college students debate guns on campus bill Peter Salas is a self-described gun-rights supporter whose family has a hunting tradition, but he opposes concealed handguns on college campuses. Clayton Smith, 21, went to federal court two years ago to win the right to stage "empty holster" protests on campus in support of gun rights. The disparate views reflect the divide among college students as Texas lawmakers continue to tinker with legislation that would allow students to carry guns. Read on |

| Forget the Tea Party: The left is waking up By Gabriel Winant | You know those experiences that serve as a living example of something you're studying or reading about? You learn a word's meaning, and then you hear it everywhere; the natural angling of your bike as you turn around the corner makes sense of a physics lesson, or your grief over a loss is reflected in an assigned novel. I'm in a PhD program in history. (Just before coming here, I wrote regularly here at Salon.) Studying history means that it's my job to learn how to look for change in human action over time, to ask a certain set of questions: How does the old die, and how is the new born? What does it look like when change happens? Of course, mostly I read books and listen to my professors and colleagues. Lately, though, I've been getting a history lesson up-close. read on Salon

Collin County Gay and Lesbian Alliance Participates in Municipal Elections | Collin County Gay and Lesbian Alliance Participates in Municipal Elections COLLIN COUNTY, TEXAS - The Collin County Gay & Lesbian Alliance (CCGLA) has sent an online survey to City Council, School Board and Mayoral candidates in Allen, Frisco, Plano, and McKinney. In April, Meet & Greets for candidates are planned in Frisco, Plano, and McKinney. "Our membership has come to rely on our Votersʼ Guide and Meet and Greet events to be informed about those who would represent us at the local level. These representatives have more impact on our daily lives than officials in Austin or Washington," said CCGLA President Morris Garcia, "The recent spate of teen suicides has reminded our community of the importance of being involved locally." Ron Turner, Chair of the Victory Committee added, "The cities of Dallas and Ft Worth have ordinances that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and in Austin lawmakers are debating legislation that would protect Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) students against bullying and harassment. We need to elect officials who will advocate for us in Collin County." CCGLA has been sending Candidate Questionnaires for a number of years. Results of the survey will be posted on the CCGLA website prior to each event. The purpose of the Meet & Greets is to allow the LGBT community and other fair-minded voters to meet the candidates and discuss issues that are not typically addressed in other forums.

Sam Seder's Who's the Caboose released on DVD ! |
Who's the Caboose? is finally being released on DVD in the U.S. a mere 16 years after its creation. Written and starring Sam Seder, as well as Sarah Silverman before she was a star, this 1995 mockumentary is as low budget as they come.
The film begins with a brief introduction about some New York art students who set out to make a documentary about a rare fatal disease plaguing homeless people. They quickly find that topic too depressing, and shift their focus to Susan Underman's (Silverman) trip to Los Angeles for pilot season. Pilot season, we are told, is the time period each year in L.A. where actors are auditioning for new television series. So it should come as no surprise that Who's the Caboose is a prequel to a TV mini-series titled none other than Pilot Season, which was out in 2004. read on
