True Blue Texans . org begins! |
New Texas Democrats group begins From True Blue TX: We are already sharing key news and updates with our Texas Democrats, as well as keeping an eye on the opposition. For example, we have a Liar, Liar feature that fact-checks Republican falsehoods, and a Job Loss Calculator that tracks the impact of GOP deficits in Texas. http://truebluetexans.org/ We might need to do this considering this ( 101 out of 150 !): N.Y. Times A12, "Texas Republicans Savoring Power," by James C. McKinley Jr., in Austin: "Riding a wave of populist anger, the Republican Party gained 22 House seats on Election Day and picked up two party switchers in December, giving it an unassailable majority of 101 in the 150-member House. They have stormed into Austin vowing to reinvent government and make Texas the model of fiscal austerity. ... Texas is now essentially a one-party state, and the real action is between factions under the Republican tent." http://nyti.ms/eq1TRA

Stella Liebeck made national headlines in 1992 when she sued McDonald's after spilling a scalding cup of hot coffee on her lap. Most people do not know that corporations have spent millions of dollars distorting her story to promote tort reform. Liebeck's case is featured in the documentary Hot Coffee, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Monday. Watch/Listen/Read |
Golden-Voiced for Comedy, Jon Benjamin All Over TV |
Jon Benjamin has played an alcoholic gym teacher; a lazy, housebound son; a crime-fighting conjoined twin; a hyper-hedonistic secret agent; Charles Darwin; a sugar-addicted 7-year-old; the devil; Yoda and a talking can of vegetables. Benjamin's ubiquity is partly due to his frequent medium of choice: animation. He's been in comedy for over 15 years, starting with the largely improvised Squigglevision-animated "Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist" in the late 1990s read on |

| The Tea Party Wags the Dog by Frank Rich NY Times |
ANY lingering doubts about Barack Obama's determination to appropriate Ronald Reagan's political spirit evaporated just before the State of the Union. No American brand is more associated with Reagan than General Electric, and it was that corporation's chief executive, Jeffrey Immelt, who popped up as the president's new wingman when the White House rolled out its latest jobs initiative on Jan. 21. Obama's speech on Tuesday, with its celebration of the nation's can-do capitalist ingenuity, moved him still closer to Reagan's sweet spot as a national cheerleader. The president even offered a remix of the old Reagan-era G.E. jingle "We bring good things to life" - now traded up to the grander "We do big things." Obama's rhetorical Morning in America is exquisitely timed to coincide with the Gipper's centennial - and, of course, the unacknowledged start of his own 2012 re-election campaign. It's remarkable how completely the G.O.P. has ceded the optimism of its patron saint to the president just as the country prepares for a deluge of Reaganiana. Obama's post-New Year's surge past a 50 percent approval rating - well ahead of both Reagan's and Bill Clinton's comeback trajectories after their respective midterm shellackings - may have only just begun. | read on |
