President Obama has endorsed the film, describing it as "heartbreaking" and "powerful," but some teachers have called for a boycott of the film for its portrayal of teachers and the teachers union. We speak to Rick Ayers, founder of the Communication Arts and Sciences program at Berkeley High School and adjunct professor in teacher education at the University of San Francisco. The FBI's search warrants indicate agents were looking for connections between local antiwar activists and groups in Colombia and the Middle East. We speak to the targets of two of the raids and former FBI officer Coleen Rowley. Listen/Watch/Read | LOCAL "Rally to Restore Sanity" BUS BEING PLANNED ! | BRING BACK SANITY RALLY BUS If you would be interested in chartering a bus to go to Jon Stewart's BRING BACK SANITY RALLY on October 30, let me know ken22640@suddenlink.net . We would leave the Dallas Area, drive straight through, and arrive the morning of the rally. We would stay overnight then return the next day by driving straight through. Ken Leach Ken22640@suddenlink.net From the site : "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore!" Who among us has not wanted to open their window and shout that at the top of their lungs? Seriously, who? Because we're looking for those people. We're looking for the people who think shouting is annoying, counterproductive, and terrible for your throat; who feel that the loudest voices shouldn't be the only ones that get heard; and who believe that the only time it's appropriate to draw a Hitler mustache on someone is when that person is actually Hitler. Or Charlie Chaplin in certain roles. Are you one of those people? Excellent. Then we'd like you to join us in Washington, DC on October 30 -- a date of no significance whatsoever -- at the Daily Show's "Rally to Restore Sanity." Ours is a rally for the people who've been too busy to go to rallies, who actually have lives and families and jobs (or are looking for jobs) -- not so much the Silent Majority as the Busy Majority. If we had to sum up the political view of our participants in a single sentence... we couldn't. That's sort of the point. http://www.rallytorestoresanity.com/ http://www.keepfearalive.com/ | "DOING MORE FOR DALLAS COUNTY" order your yard sign today | Stand up for the progress that is happening in Dallas County because of Democratic leadership. Two decades later, he was invited to visit Hiroshima and meet survivors of the atomic attack. In this short and powerful book, Zinn offers his deep personal reflections and political analysis of these events, their consequences, and the profound influence they had in transforming him from an order-taking combat soldier to one of our greatest anti-authoritarian, antiwar historians. This book was finalized just prior to Zinn's passing in January 2010, and is published on the sixty-fifth anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima. | North Texas Democrats : Notes and News | Denton County Democrats Gas Drilling Forum in Flower Mound Answers to your gas drilling questions is the aim of this forum hosted by the DCDP Environment and Energy Committee. SCHEDULE Wednesday, October 6, 2010 6pm-9pm Wednesday, October 13, 2010 6pm-9pm Wednesday, October 27, 2010 6pm-9pm Grand Prairie Democrats Saturday, October 9: 10 AM, Avion Village Clubhouse, 800 Skyline Rd., Grand Prairie Rowlett Democratic Club Saturday, October 9: 3 - 5 PM, Rowlett Public Library, 3900 Main St., Rowlett Tarrant County Dems Once again, we will be getting together at The Usual. As an added incentive, we are also going to offer a tour of Cowboy Stadium on Saturday, October 30th, which is the day before the game with Jacksonville. The "40 for 40" promotion was, obviously, originally intended to draw 40 people who would contribute $40 each to the Party. I think we can, and should, do a lot better than that. Although the requested donation will still be $40*, I am hopeful several hundred people will show up for these events---and in that way we will be able to achieve our goal of raising enough money to achieve our Get-Out-The-Vote goals. Please plan to attend! We have all worked so hard to continue the progress our Party has made over the past few years it would be tragic to see our efforts fall short simply because we could not raise a few thousand dollars. We are SO close! RSVP by ordering your tickets below. Questions? Look for additional information soon | | | | Obama in command: The Rolling Stone interview | We arrived at the southwest gate of the white house a little after one o'clock on the afternoon of September 17th. It was a warm fall day, but the capital felt quiet and half-empty, as it does on Fridays at the end of summer, with Congress still in recess. Rolling Stone had interviewed Barack Obama twice before, both times aboard his campaign plane - first in June 2008, a few days after he won the Democratic nomination, and again that October, a month before his election. This time executive editor Eric Bates and I sat down with the president in the Oval Office, flanked by busts of Abraham Lincoln and Martin Luther King Jr. The conversation stretched on for nearly an hour and a quarter. The president began by complimenting my multi-colored striped socks. "If I wasn't president," he laughed, "I could wear socks like that." When you came into office, you felt you would be able to work with the other side. When did you realize that the Republicans had abandoned any real effort to work with you and create bipartisan policy? Well, I'll tell you that given the state of the economy during my transition, between my election and being sworn in, our working assumption was that everybody was going to want to pull together, because there was a sizable chance that we could have a financial meltdown and the entire country could plunge into a depression. So we had to work very rapidly to try to create a combination of measures that would stop the free-fall and cauterize the job loss. read on | | The Errington Thompson Show | Do you want to hear a great Progressive Talk Radio show ? They have transformed the U.S. Armed Forces, defined a generation of veterans, left thousands dead and wounded. Yet they have also been fought largely out of view, with fewer than one percent of Americans directly involved. And while the wars may be winding down, the after-effects are only just beginning. This blog is a first-of-its-kind collaboration between The Washington Post and the people who live the wars everyday--soldiers, veterans, caregivers, spouses, advocates. Here, experts and everyday people can come together to talk about how the war has changed their lives. Accompanying these conversations is a series of stories by reporter Christian Davenport that, over the course of a year, will explore the impact of the wars in the Washington region, from Walter Reed to Arlington Cemetery to a local high school. Together, these stories and this blog seek to create a conversation and a community that shed some light on what the wars mean to all of us." read here | | |
