Rolling Stone's Tim Dickinson on the Inside Story of How Obama Let the World's Most Dangerous Oil Company Get Away with Murder

An extensive new investigation into the Obama administration's handling of the BP oil spill disaster reveals that it was government mismanagement, delays and absence of oversight that allowed the crisis to spiral out of control. In the article "The Spill, the Scandal, and the President," Rolling Stone's Tim Dickinson writes, "Though George W. Bush paved the way for the catastrophe, it was Obama who gave BP the green light to drill." Dickinson explores how Interior Secretary Ken Salazar kept in place the oil industry-friendly environmental guidelines that Bush had implemented and ultimately let BP, an oil company with the worst safety record, to get away with murder.

Experiments in Torture: Medical Group Accuses CIA of Carrying Out Illegal Human Experimentation

A new report from Physicians for Human Rights accuses the Bush administration of conducting illegal and unethical human experimentation and research on prisoners in CIA custody. The report details how doctors, psychologists and other professionals monitored the effects of sleep deprivation, waterboarding and other so-called "enhanced interrogation" techniques on more than a dozen prisoners. It charges that CIA doctors and other medical personnel turned the prisoners into research subjects and collected data in order to study and refine those techniques, but did so under the guise of trying to protect the health of the detainees.

Frontline: Obama's Deal

The process consumed much of President Obama's first year in office--and, even months later, polls still find Americans deeply confused about whether it was a good thing for the country or themselves.
In Obama's Deal, re-airing this Tuesday night, veteran FRONTLINE producer Michael Kirk investigates what it took to pass this year's historic health care reform legislation, and what it might mean for the Obama presidency, as the health care reform vote becomes a pivotal issue in many midterm election races heating up this summer.
Through interviews with administration officials, senators, and Washington lobbyists, Obama's Deal reveals how an idealistic president decided to pursue the health care fight, despite the warnings of many of his closest advisers. The film also shows how, in the end, a pragmatic president, facing stiff resistance even within his own party, cut deals with many of the powerful special interests he had so determinedly campaigned against.

The Icarus Syndrome: A History of American Hubris
By Peter Beinart

Product Description
In The Icarus Syndrome, Peter Beinart tells a tale as old as the Greeks -- a story about the seductions of success. Beinart describes Washington on the eve of three wars -- World War One, Vietnam, and Iraq -- three moments when American leaders decided they could remake the world in their image. Each time, leading intellectuals declared that history was over, and the spread of democracy was inevitable. Each time, a president held the nation in the palm of his hand. And each time, a war conceived in arrogance brought untold tragedy.
In dazzling color, Beinart portrays three extraordinary generations: the progressives who took America into World War I, led by Woodrow Wilson, the lonely preacher's son who became the closest thing to a political messiah the world had ever seen. The Camelot intellectuals who took America into Vietnam, led by Lyndon Johnson, who lay awake at night after night shaking with fear that his countrymen considered him weak. And George W. Bush and the post-cold war neoconservatives, the romantic bullies who believed they could bludgeon the Middle East and liberate it at the same time. Like Icarus, each of these generations crafted "wings" -- a theory about America's relationship to the world. They flapped carefully at first, but gradually lost their inhibitions until, giddy with success, they flew into the sun.

*White House and State Department officials are recommending Peter Beinart's new book, 'The Icarus Syndrome: A History of American Hubris,' out Tuesday. Harper describes it as 'a tale as old as the Greeks -- a story about the seductions of success. On June 26, we who live in Dallas have a unique opportunity to have our voices heard by President Obama and the Congress on one of the most important issues facing our country - the Federal Debt.

Dallas is one of six main sites for a nationwide electronic town meeting entitled "America Speaks: Our Budget, Our Economy" that will take place on Saturday, June 26, 2010 at the Dallas Convention Center.  On that day, thousands of Americans across the country linked by satellite and web cast will participate in an unprecedented national discussion to help find solutions to our budget deficit and the national debt.
This National Town Meeting will address one of our country's biggest problems.  The federal government is spending much more money every year on programs and activities than it takes in through taxes.  This situation is getting worse and worse. Unless we make changes we will face huge problems with our economy. Growing debt could make it harder to get good jobs, afford a nice place to live or have enough money for health care and other necessities in life.
Our nation's leaders are going to have to make some difficult decisions about how to deal with this budget problem and they want to know what you think. The purpose of this national discussion on June 26th is to find common ground on some of the tough choices our country needs to make about spending, taxes and the role of government.  Americans across the country will weigh-in on different strategies for dealing with this problem.  After the meeting, the results will be shared directly with the President and Members of Congress and will also be widely publicized by the news media.
This is an exciting opportunity for people to share their concerns and voice their thoughts about an important issue to our country that will affect our future prosperity. For more information go to
http://USAbudgetdiscussion.org and to register to attend the Dallas Town Meeting online go to http://USAbudgetdiscussion.org/dallas. I hope you will also invite those you work with as well as your friends and neighbors to attend.

We need to have people who represent the broad diversity of Dallas take part in this event so please do everything you can to get the word out and recruit participants for "America Speaks: Our Budget, Our Economy."

NOTE: if you are sending this electronically, you might consider asking them to join us on Facebook. Here is some text and link you can use:

GASLAND Movie Watch Parties

On Monday, June 21st GASLAND, Josh Fox's award winning documentary will preview on HBO. Thousands of us are getting together in living rooms around the state to watch this award winning documentary.
When Josh Fox received an offer to drill for natural gas under his property in Pennsylvania, he did what few landowners think to do-he conducted his own research into the drilling process.
With a hand-held camera in one hand and a banjo on his knee, Fox hit the road on a 24 state tour to conduct a "seat-of-pants investigation" . In the process, he filmed the award winning documentary, GASLAND, that uncovers the dirty truth about the so-called "clean energy".
Winner of the special Jury Prize at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival, GASLAND, is more than a documentary. It is a piece of art with beautiful cinematography that propels the audience to interact with collective gasps of horror, jubilant applause, hilarity and tears.
No party near you? Host your own and get on the map by sending an email to Texas.
OGAP@earthworksaction.org
After the movie, there will be a chance to discuss all your gas drilling concerns with friends and neighbors. Texas

OGAP will provide each host with the following organizational tools:

Legislating for Women and Girls in Texas, a DWF Gender Matters forum

06/15/2010 - 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Arlington Hall, 3333 Turtle Creek Blvd., Dallas, TX 75219

Legislating for Women and Girls in Texas, a DWF Gender Matters forum planned for June 15, will assemble four experienced advocates from the DFW and Austin areas to discuss the current legislative environment and the upcoming session.  Speakers include Jason Sabo of United Ways of Texas, Patti Clapp from the Dallas Regional Chamber, Lynda Ender with T he Senior Source and Madeline McClure of TexProtects, the Texas Association for the Protection of Children.

The 82nd Texas State Legislative Session, due to open next January, promises to be a pivotal time as elected and appointed officials contend with growing needs and shrinking resources in the state.  In this very competitive environment, advocates for women and girls must understand where opportunities exist to advance new policies and programs as well as where lines must be drawn to protect our most vulnerable citizens.

This forum builds on the DWF gender analysis of the Texas state budget, presented in February and available online.  Panelists will focus on policy initiatives in key areas such as education, health and aging, and child protection that are already underway in Dallas and Austin as well as the work ahead to finalize and successfully implement their legislative agendas.

The Protest Was Only The Beginning, Join Our Wiki Protest

We'd like your help in a new kind of protest. This is going to be an online protest that we can all participate in. We want to open up our protest of Goldman Sachs to everyone's suggestions and action. Goldman took $13 billion of taxpayer money they had no right to take, as explained here. That's $43.33 for every man, woman and child in the country. So, please help us get it back.

We want your suggestions as to how we can get the money back from them. You can write these down and share them with everybody in our new wiki protest page set up for this purpose. Then we would like you to start taking action on either your suggestions or someone else's on the site. We have to be very polite and civil. Don't go to their house. But if you see them in the street, by their offices in New York or DC or anywhere else (we would also like information on where all of the Goldman offices are), simply ask them for our money back.

Two Weddings, a Divorce and 'Glee'
By FRANK RICH

Two Weddings, a Divorce and 'Glee'
By FRANK RICH

THOSE of us left off the guest list could only fantasize about Rush Limbaugh's nuptials last weekend. Now cruising into marriage No. 4 - an impressive total for a guy not quite 60 - Rush staged a lavish luau at the Breakers in Palm Beach. The revelers included what some might regard as the Rat Pack from hell - Sean Hannity, Rudy Giuliani, James Carville and Clarence Thomas. The scriptural readings remain a mystery. But we did learn the identity of the pop deity anointed as the wedding singer. That would be Elton John, whose last, albeit second-class, wedding was a civil union with David Furnish in 2005.

Why would America's right-wing radio king hire an openly gay entertainer to star at his wedding? And why would one of the world's foremost AIDS activists sing "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" for a gay-baiting provocateur who has trivialized AIDS and speculated that same-sex marriage could lead people to marry dogs? Sir Elton's fee was reported to be a cool $1 million. Which goes to show that pop music and cash have the power to make even stranger bedfellows than politics.

Experiments in Torture

Experiments in Torture: Evidence of Human Subject Research and Experimentation in the "Enhanced" Interrogation Program, just released by Physicians for Human Rights (PHR) confirms previous suspicions and provides the first strong evidence that the CIA was indeed engaged in illegal and unethical research on detainees in its custody. The report, the result of six months of detailed work, analyzes now-public documents, including the "torture memos" from the Justice Department's Office of Legal Counsel and the CIA's Inspector General Report and the accompanying CIA Office of Medical Services (OMS) guidelines for monitoring of detainees.

Live feed of BP oil spill available via House Committee on Energy

Live feed of BP oil spill available via House Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming
Follow up to postings on the Gulf Coast oil spill, this news release: "Following a demand from Rep. Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) for a live feed of the BP oil spill to be made publicly available on the web, BP said they would release the feed and it will be shown on Rep. Markey's committee website at www.globalwarming.house.gov. [Note: traffic volume has made access intermittent.] "This may be BP's footage, but it's America's ocean. Now anyone will be able to see the real-time effects the BP spill is having on our ocean," said Rep. Markey, who conducted a briefing today with independent scientists where he reiterated the call for a video feed. "This footage will aid analysis by independent scientists blocked by BP from coming to see the spill." Markey sent letters earlier [May 19, 2010] to BP America's CEO Lamar McKay asking for the footage to be made public on BP's website. If BP could not host the footage, Rep. Markey offered to host it on his website free of charge. "BP is going to have to pay for the cleanup of this spill and the long-term damage. Hosting this video on our website is the only freebie they're going to get," Rep. Markey said."
