Air America vanishes into the ether, while Glenn Beck indoctrinates 2.7 million daily viewers with his histrionic brand of right-wing lunacy. Independent news agencies must continuously solicit donations from readers to stay afloat, while hate-filled shock jock Rush Limbaugh makes $50 million a year. On the other hand, there's still a lot of great progressive media on the airwaves, including Democracy Now!, which airs on more than 800 TV and radio stations worldwide, along with radio shows by Ed Schultz and Stephanie Miller. The Nation and TheNation.com are part of a progressive journalistic community that is challenging the right in every medium. ZP Heller, a writer (HuffPo, OpenLeft, AlterNet) who is working on a novel lampooning corporate media, lists ten steps you can take to help keep progressive journalism alive: read on The Nation Magazine | 2010 Texas Young Democrats State Convention | The 2010 Texas Young Democrats State Convention details are as follows: Date April 23 - 25, 2010 LocationUniversity of Texas at Austin - exact location TBA Hotel Courtyard & Fairfield Inn & Suites by Marriott 5660 North IH-35 /Austin, Texas 78751 USA Please contact the hotel at: 512-302-5550 and let them know that you are with the Texas Young Democrats. How can people work together to challenge the way things are, to help redistribute wealth and power, to create a more just and humane society? The answer is "Creative Community Organizing". This latest work by legendary activist, musician and author Si Kahn, is a different kind of community organizing book. As with other books, including some by Kahn himself, it does outline many of the practical tactics organizers use. But it's also about community organizing as a way of thinking and a way of life. "Creative Community Organizing" suggests ways that readers can identify and analyze the various options for action, weigh the positives and negatives and make choices among them. In other words, focus on the end goal and then determine the best strategies, tactics and methods to achieve that goal. It will help established community organizers become more creative and innovative, encourage them to question established principles and decide whether or not they still work. Those new to the field will discover a whole new way of looking at the world - they'll gain a new sense of empowerment, understand that things don't have to be the way they are, that the world can be more fair and humane - and that they can live and work in ways that help make that happen. 20 Principles for Successful Community Organizing Kahn's new book, "Creative Community Organizing: a Guide for Rabble-Rousers, Activists and Quiet Lovers of Justice," is a manifesto for the politically active. Here many immigrants from Mexico settled to begin their new lives in the United States. Using archival photographs, home movies and personal accounts of past and present residents, Little Mexico/El Barrio tells the story of a once thriving community defined not only by specific geographic boundaries, but by a common language and cultural heritage. The half-hour program includes interviews with prominent Mexican American community leaders and the personal accounts of past and present residents of this neighborhood where everybody knew one another. "The community was very close knitted," said Francisco X. "Pancho" Luna. "In those days, nobody locked their doors. There was no air conditioner so we left the doors open to get a breeze. We enjoyed those days." Among the stories and memories relived in Little Mexico/El Barrio are: Maria Luna, who started her tortilla-making business in the 1920s; St. Ann's Catholic School, Travis Elementary and Cumberland Hill School, the places where Little Mexico children went to school; and the discrimination many residents faced as they tried to deal with the not always smooth transformation of the neighborhood from predominantly white to Mexican American. This 1997 KERA program was produced by Yolette Garcia and Rick Leal. | Peaceful Vocations is having a garage sale! | As a fund-raising effort, PV will be having a garage sale on Saturday, April 17th. KCBS' Janice Wright reports read watch HERE Ed Schultz hosts stranded Ice-bridge truckers MSNBC and Dial Global talk star Ed Schultz received an interesting text message while preparing to go on the air earlier this week. A contractor working for him at his newly purchased fishing lodge on Manitoba's Wrong Lake told him his closed-for-the-season lodge was hosting a group of ice-bridge truckers who became stranded when weather left them with no return route. The truckers were hauling supplies to First Nations people in the area when the warm weather caused the ice to melt sooner than expected. So the trucks are stuck there until next winter since the region has no roads - the only way into the area is by small aircraft or canoe! Now, Schultz and his wife are contemplating keeping the lodge open year round to serve the truckers who drive their vehicles to deliver supplies to the Aboriginal Canadians via ice covered rivers and lakes. Schultz recently purchased the former Thunderbird Lodge & Outposts (known to fishermen for its tremendous Walleye and Northern Pike) and renamed it Big Eddie's North Country Lodge (Mar. 26, 2010) HERE Jack Rice Receives 2010 Freedom of Speech Award. Talk host and journalist Jack Rice, who broadcasts via jackrice.org, is the recipient of the 2010 Freedom of Speech Award which was given to him at the TALKERS magazine New Media Seminar in New York City on March 20. Rice, who has worked in talk radio at WCCO, Minneapolis; KOGO, San Diego and, most recently, at Air America Media, is receiving the honor in part because he is, in the words of TALKERS magazine managing editor Kevin Casey - who presented the award - "a talk media broadcaster who has made an exemplary effort to put preconceived political prejudice aside in a search for truth on an issue-by-issue and story-by-story basis." | Walmart: The Inhuman Essence of a Corporate "Person" | Jim Hightower, Truthout: "I'm curious about those five Supreme Court justices who recently decreed that a corporation is a 'person' with human rights: Do you think they ever met Mr. Walmart? Read the Article | | | | It's a Bird, It's a Plane, It's Obama! by Frank Rich NYT | | NOT since Clark Kent changed in a phone booth has there been an instant image makeover to match Barack Obama's in the aftermath of his health care victory. "He went from Jimmy Carter to F.D.R. in just a fortnight," said one of the "Game Change" authors, Mark Halperin, on MSNBC. "Look at the steam in the man's stride!" exclaimed Chris Matthews. "Is it just me, or does Barack Obama seem different since health care passed?" wrote Peter Beinart in The Daily Beast, which, like The Financial Times, ran an illustration portraying the gangly president as a newly bulked-up Superman. What a difference winning makes - especially in America. Whatever did (or didn't) get into Obama's Wheaties, this much is certain: No one is talking about the clout of Scott Brown or Rahm Emanuel any more. read on | We need you to be a sponsor! | Sponsor an edition today | Support the Dallas Peace Center Join or renew today! | Dallas Peace Center needs YOU! | Do you know someone who would like to receive this newsletter ? | Neil Durrance for Congress | Return Government to the People 26the Congressional District of Texas -Keep American jobs in America -Make health care affordable for all U.S. citizens -Increase Pell Grants and decrease tuition 940.239.0380 www.durranceforcongress.com | MAPLight.org - New Web Site Reveals Money and Politics Links in New Ways | "MAPLight.org, the award-winning nonpartisan, nonprofit research organization dedicated to illuminating the connection between money and politics, has launched a new web site which shines the light of transparency and accountability in powerful ways as never before. Garrett / Dallas Morning News AUSTIN - The Crawford Peace House, once a launch pad for antiwar protests as President George W. Bush sought refuge at his nearby ranch, could soon be on the auction block. Dallas-area resident Johnny Wolf, who bought the century-old frame house seven years ago, said Friday he's five months behind on the mortgage and faces foreclosure. "It's hard, when the wars are still going on, to have to do this," said Wolf, a stage designer from Forney who said the recession has nearly driven him to bankruptcy. "It seems like the peace movement has been waning." This week, California peace activist Cindy Sheehan sent an e-mail urging donations so the house can be preserved as a peace museum and visitor center. read on and help is you can | | |
