"We have written, we have called, we have demonstrated to help this administration hear the voices of the majority of this country that wants the U.S. to get out of Afghanistan, but it still looks likely that 40,000 more of our sons and daughters will be deployed," said Dallas Peace Center Director Lon Burnam. Obama's advisors have disagreed on strategy in Afghanistan, and one high level State Department employee in Afghanistan, Matthew Hoh, has quit because of the counter-productivity U.S. policies. "There are alternatives to a military escalation," said Lon Burnam Director of the Dallas Peace Center, "the real enemy in Afghanistan is poverty not Al-Qaeda or even the Taliban. First let's stop killing Afghans, second create Afghan centric policies and third work for a regional solution by bringing Russia, India, Iran and Pakistan to the negotiating table". Those seeking peace will gather to vigil on Monday, November 30 (the eve of the President's Tuesday announcement) from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Earle Cabell Federal Building, 1100 Commerce St. in Dallas. | Democracy Now | Naomi Klein on Climate Debt: Why Rich Countries Should Pay Reparations To Poor Countries For The Climate Crisis With the Copenhagen climate summit two weeks away, best-selling journalist Naomi Klein examines the grass-roots movement behind the climate debate proposal that argues all the costs associated with adapting to a more hostile ecology-everything from building stronger sea walls to switching to cleaner, more expensive technologies-are the responsibility of the countries that created the crisis. Klein also discusses the 10th anniversary of the Seattle WTO protests and the 10th anniversary of her first book, "No Logo." Listen/Watch/Read Blackwater's Secret War in Pakistan: Jeremy Scahill Reveals Private Military Firm Operating in Pakistan Under Covert Assassination and Kidnapping Program In an explosive new article in The Nation magazine, investigative journalist and Democracy Now! correspondent Jeremy Scahill reveals the private military firm Blackwater is part of a covert program in Pakistan that includes planning the assassination and kidnapping of Taliban and Al-Qaeda suspects. Blackwater is also said to be involved in a previously undisclosed U.S. military drone campaign that has killed scores of people inside Pakistan. The article says the program has become so secretive that top Obama administration and military officials have likely been unaware of its existence. In a Democracy Now! exclusive, Scahill joins us for his first interview since the story broke. Listen/Watch/Read | Three events THIS WEEK from Dallas Peace Center | Monday, November 30, 7:00 p.m. 10th Anniversary of the WTO "Battle in Seattle" "The protests against the World Trade Organization that rocked Seattle, Washington in late 1999 were an incredibly significant moment in the history of popular protests. Not only did the protestors succeed in disrupting the meetings of the world's most influential trade-governing bodies, but the event drew together incredibly diverse constituencies that represented a wide range of interests, many of which would seem to be incompatible at first light." - The WTO History Project Come hear from activists who were in Seattle to protest increased globalization and its effect on our environment, culture and economic systems on November 30, 1999, and how that struggle is more important than ever as corporations displace governments as the driving forces in public policy and international relations. Panelists will be Aaron Rowe, formerly with SEIU at the University of Washington; Fouad Jaber, formerly a student activist and now professor of Environmental Engineering at Texas A&M-Dallas; Bob Cash of the Texas Fair Trade Coalition; and Gene Lantz of Jobs With Justice. Larry Wilkerson, USA (ret.), according to Robert Dreyfuss in his recent Rolling Stone article "The Generals' Revolt." Wilkerson, who was chief of staff at the State Department (2002-2005) and now teaches at George Washington University, was alluding to President John F. HERE | We Haven't Forgotten. Neither Should You Texas ACLU | Almost a year ago, news broke from west Texas of a prisoner uprising at a federal detention center operated by a private correctional firm. The December 12, 2008 uprising at the Reeves County Detention Center was not the first sign that something was seriously wrong at the facility, but it was the most dramatic and desperate. After an inmate with epilepsy died alone in his cell (Texas Observer) his fellow inmates rose up to complain about the poor conditions, including lack of medical treatment, in the facility. Within a few weeks, a second disturbance (CNN) made headlines. Here are just some of the allegations against Reeves: Failure to provide basic medical care for inmates, resulting in preventable deaths Overcrowded living conditions Chronically understaffed and in violation of federal inmate-guard staffing requirements Prisoners report living under constant states of lockdown Many of you supported our call for an investigation of the facility but to date the federal Bureau of Prisons has taken no action.
