| Dallas Gas Drilling Task Force |
We need as many fracking opponents in the audience as possible. If you wish to speak on record, you can certainly do that, too, but you are not required. The more folks there and the more new attendees added to the usual suspects, the stronger we will be.
The proposed ordinance is the City Plan Commission's modifications to the one proposed by the Gas Drilling Task Force - yes, you should be confused. We have fought many layers of battles at City Hall to get an ordinance that protects the health and safety of the people of Dallas. The current version is far from ideal, but we do like the 1500 foot setbacks between drilling area and protected properties. We want to stop the industry-favoring members of the Council in their efforts to reduce those setbacks by an amendment. We do want the Council to amend this ordinance to return to the ban on drilling in floodplains and parklands.
They are scheduled to begin receiving public comments at 1:00 on both dates. Bodies in the seats are key to our ability to pressure the Council. If you can only attend one of the meetings, December 11th is the most important.
Date: Wednesday, December 11th Time: 1:00 - 4:00 pm Place: Dallas City Hall, Council Chambers Parking: available at metered spots at the rear of City Hall, and at several privately owned parking lots in the vicinity |

| The Punishment Cure By PAUL KRUGMAN | The Punishment Cure By PAUL KRUGMAN Six years have passed since the United States economy entered the Great Recession, four and a half since it officially began to recover, but long-term unemployment remains disastrously high. And Republicans have a theory about why this is happening. Their theory is, as it happens, completely wrong. But they're sticking to it - and as a result, 1.3 million American workers, many of them in desperate financial straits, are set to lose unemployment benefits at the end of December. | read on |
Refusing to Expand Medicaid Will Cost Texas $9 Billion |
A new study by the Commonwealth Fund, "How States Stand to Gain or Lose Federal Funds by Opting In or Out of the Medicaid Expansion," shows that Texas clearly stands to lose the most of any state. Because of Rick Perry's refusal to expand Medicaid, Texas will forego over $9 billion in federal funds while Perry holds out for a Medicaid block grant that he'll never get.
