Voters to GOP... |

Democracy Now |
After an Election Day that saw a number of wins for progressive causes nationwide, activists opposed to "corporate personhood" - the notion that corporations have equal rights to individuals - are pushing ahead with a campaign to add a 28th amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would reject the idea that corporations are people and reverse the 2010 landmark case Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission. We speak to John Bonifaz, a constitutional attorney and co-founder and director of Free Speech for People. Watch/Listen/Read Advocates for labor, women's and immigration rights are celebrating a number of key victories in Tuesday's state elections. In Ohio, voters defeated Republican Gov. John Kasich's controversial limits on the collective bargaining rights of state employees. In Arizona, Russell Pearce, the architect of the state's controversial anti-immigration law has lost his state senate seat in an unprecedented recall vote. Meanwhile, in Maine, voters have defeated a Republican measure that barred same-day voter registration on election day. For analysis, we're joined from Ohio by reporter John Nichols of The Nation magazine. Watch/Listen/Read Environmental activists are claiming victory after the Obama administration announced Thursday it will postpone any decision on the proposed 1,700-mile Keystone XL tar sands oil pipeline until 2013. The announcement was made just days after more than 10,000 people encircled the White House calling on President Obama to reject the project, the second major action against the project organized by Bill McKibben's 350.org and Tar Sands Action. We play an excerpt of Canadian author and activist Naomi Klein speaking last night at an event about Occupy Wall Street organized by The Nation magazine. Watch/Listen/Read |

Koch Family Empire Building --The Texas Observer |
The Koch brothers have bankrolled a broad attack on progressive government programs. Their grandfather's history in Texas helps explain why. Charles and David Koch are the most powerful right-wing billionaires of our time. They have spent hundreds of millions bankrolling a broad attack against Social Security, organized labor, financial regulations, environmental protection and public education. The brothers plan to spend at least $200 million trying to elect right-wing, anti-government Republicans in 2012, according to Politico. They seem hell-bent on dragging America back to the dark days of unregulated capitalism. The history of their grandfather in Texas may help explain why. Little has been written about Harry Koch. He's the least-known member of the Koch family, which has been marching under the same laissez-faire banner for the past three generations. Harry Koch emigrated to America in 1888, settled in a North Texas railroad town and became a newspaper publisher and aggressive corporate booster. He advocated for railroad and banking interests, amassing wealth and helping big business fight organized labor and squelch reforms. Much of the Koch brothers' ideology can be found in Harry Koch's newspaper editorials of nearly a century ago. Take, for instance, the Kochs' current fight against Social Security. Harry Koch took part in a multi-year right-wing propaganda campaign to shoot down New Deal programs. Grandfather and grandsons employ eerily familiar talking points to bash government pension and welfare programs. read on

Occupy Wall Street Is Not a Spectator Sport: 5 Ways the 99 Percent Can Contribute to the Movement Right Now |
How can the rest of the 99 percent demonstrate our outrage? Here are five things we can do, without parking a tent in the street. Let's take a look at where we are right now. There is battle royale underway between inhabitants of two entirely different universes over what's wrong with our nation and what should be fixed. On the one hand, the entire political establishment, blessed by Wall Street, wants the conversation to be all about debt and "entitlements." We are told 24/7 that we're living over our heads, that our social safety net is too expensive, and that we need to cut, cut, cut trillions of dollars from public budgets so we don't become the next Greece. read on Ten Ways the Occupy Movement Changes Everything Sarah van Gelder, David Korten and Steve Piersanti, YES! Magazine: "Before the Occupy Wall Street movement, there was little discussion of the outsized power of Wall Street and the diminishing fortunes of the middle class... Occupy Wall Street changed that. In fact, it may represent the best hope in years that 'we the people' will step up to take on the critical challenges of our time. Here's how the Occupy movement is already changing everything." Read the Article Just days after performing at the Occupy Wall Street encampment in Lower Manhattan, the legendary musicians David Crosby and Graham Nash join us live in our studio. For the duo, Occupy Wall Street is the latest in a number of causes they have supported in their historic careers stretching back nearly five decades. Throughout their careers, politics has played a central role in their music. Watch/Listen/Read |

The Young Turks With Cenk Uygur To Debut On Current TV Dec. 5 |
Current TV announced on Thursday that The Young Turks With Cenk Uygur, their new show starring former MSNBC anchor Cenk Uygur, now has an official start date: Dec. 5. The show, according to a release from Current, will air at 7 p.m., acting as the lead-in for Keith Olbermann. Uygur left MSNBC this summer on somewhat bitter terms. He had been hosting at 6 p.m., the slot that now belongs to Al Sharpton. MSNBC offered Uygur a lower-profile weekend slot, but he rejected it, opting to instead return to his popular Internet show. In July, Uygur gave a three-video explanation of why he left MSNBC. The juicy part of his side of the story was that MSNBC president Phil Griffin had called him into his office in April and told him he had been talking to people in Washington and that they did not like Uygur's tone. MSNBC quickly denied Uygur's claims to Mediaite. Regardless, Uygur went back to his Internet show, which has pulled in over 500,000,000 viewers over its entire run. read on |
Join the Texas Freedom Network today! |
The Texas Freedom Network is the only organization in Texas devoted full-time to monitoring the radical right and its attacks on the mainstream values we all hold dear. TFN fights to defend these values at the State Board of Education and at the state Capitol - with help from thousands of grassroots activists just like you who write letters, attend hearings and sign petitions. We work hard to educate Texans through the news media, exposing the agenda, activities, funding and influence of the radical right in Texas. TFN would not be successful without your help. As we continue to strengthen public education, protect religious freedom and defend civil liberties, your involvement and support are extremely important. http://www.tfn.org/ Stephanie Miller and Sexy Liberal tour were in Austin this past weekend and they donated part of the proceeds to TFN |
Gardeners In Community Development -Donations to Food Pantries | WE NEED VOLUNTEERS FOR HARVESTING AND GARDEN WORKDAYS http://www.gardendallas.org/donations_to_food_pantries.htm
We can always use an extra hand or two with harvesting and getting produce delivered to local food pantries. These donations help alleviate hunger for families that have lost jobs, for seniors and children, and for neighborhood residents that are struggling in these hard times.
Most of the families that have garden plots come from needy neighborhoods, and see community gardening as a way for people to work together to help each other. They grow food for themselves and for others. They help train and educate families and children that come to participate and learn. These community gardens are vital to building strong revitalized communities that can tackle issues like hunger and poverty together.
HARVESTING Hope Community Garden -- every Sunday at 4 pm 1108 Cristler, Dallas 75223 Our Saviour Community Garden -- every Tuesday at 9:30 am 1616 N Jim Miller Rd, Dallas 75217

| The New Progressive Movement by Jeffrey D Sachs NYTimes | OCCUPY WALL STREET and its allied movements around the country are more than a walk in the park. They are most likely the start of a new era in America. Historians have noted that American politics moves in long swings. We are at the end of the 30-year Reagan era, a period that has culminated in soaring income for the top 1 percent and crushing unemployment or income stagnation for much of the rest. The overarching challenge of the coming years is to restore prosperity and power for the 99 percent. Thirty years ago, a newly elected Ronald Reagan made a fateful judgment: "Government is not the solution to our problem. Government is the problem." Taxes for the rich were slashed, as were outlays on public services and investments as a share of national income. Only the military and a few big transfer programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and veterans' benefits were exempted from the squeeze. read on | |
