Labor Day events ! |

Celebrate Labor Day at the 18th Annual Dallas County Democratic Party Labor Day Picnic on Monday, September 7, 2015. From noon to 4 PM, join your fellow Democrats, including elected officials and candidates. We will meet again at the usual place, 4930 Military Parkway [the former Catholic Czech Club], Dallas 75227. This event is FREE, and it's the best kind of Texas picnic: It's inside with air-conditioning! Fried chicken, hot dogs and iced tea will be provided at no cost. Just bring your favorite casserole, side dish, salad or dessert.

Texas Is Worst in Health Insurance, Third Worst in Health Care Quality By Eric Nicholson Dallas Observer | 
Yes, Texas, it's just as bad as it seems. Since the implementation of the Affordable Care Act, the percentage of Texans without health insurance has dropped dramatically, from 27 percent in 2013 to 20.8 percent this year, according to Gallup. This is good news, as it means that a couple million more people in the state have greater access to preventative care and less of a chance of being bankrupted by hospital bills. The bad news is that Texas, thanks in large part to its refusal to expand Medicaid under Obamacare, still has the highest percentage of uninsured residents in the country. No other state cracks 20 percent. |

Jobs with Justice rally and march | Jobs with Justice rally and march Saturday, September 5, 2015 Martin Luther King Jr Family Clinic 2922 Martin Luther King Junior Boulevard, Dallas, TX (map) We ( Common Ground Street Choir) are invited to participate (and sing) during a march and rally on Saturday, Sept 5, with Jobs with Justice - see details below. Briefly, a year will be held from 10 to 11:45 regarding child poverty as it intersects with unlivable wages and worker protections. At 11:45 the march begins (going till about 12:30 - not long) and then the rally/picnic. We are invited to attend the hearing....then sing during march and rally. Wear a yellow t-shirt if you can... (and I'd like to get a feel for how many can come sing) The theme of this year's hearing will be "Community, Faith, and Labor: Forward Together Addressing Child Poverty." Among cities with at least one million residents Dallas has the highest rate of child poverty, at 38 percent. Ending child poverty will mean demanding livable wages and better protections for workers, increased access to healthcare and adequate food, as well as racial justice and immigration. Communities of color are disproportionately affected by inequality and child poverty, and poverty wages are easy to inflict on undocumented workers.
