Texas Alliance for Retired Americans: Honor Congressman Marc Veasey with Us!

Honor Congressman Marc Veasey with Us!

in the photo:Judy Bryant introduces Congressman Veasey at UAW 848 hall

Let's honor the working peoples' champion together!

*6-8 PM Friday, May 29

*UAW 848 hall

*2218 E Main   Grand Prairie, Texas 75050

Contact Judy Bryant by e-mail or at 214-729-0063 for tickets.

Since his election to head District 33, Congressman Veasey has held regular meetings to listen to retirees and other working people. He has spent days doing the same work we do in workplaces throughout the district. When working people asked someone to champion our cause during the big argument over "Fast Track" and the "Trans Pacific Partnership" unfair trade deal, Congressman Veasey stood up first and strongest.

Retirees are relying on Congressman Veasey more than ever because anti-worker politicians are trying to privatize Medicare and weaken Social Security!

This will be the second time that the Congressman has volunteered to help the Texas Alliance for Retired Americans raise funds. He is very familiar with UAW 848 because the retirees there were the first labor organization in North Texas to invite him when he first began to run for office. UAW 848 is smack-dab in the middle of District 33. Please join us on May 29.

Become A 2015 DCDP Summer Fellow

Dallas Democratic Summer Fellows will work closely with our Executive Director to recruit other leaders and organizers, register and contact voters, and build neighborhood volunteer teams that will help keep Dallas blue. Fellows will learn the ins and outs of grassroots organizing while building lasting relationships with one another and supporters in the community. They will participate in and help lead phone banks, block walks and voter registration drives for a minimum of 20 hours per week.

Our Fellows are committed to applying their enthusiasm and passion for progressive causes and candidates to community organizing in Dallas County. They are interested in empowering supporters to become volunteers, and non-voters to become civic participants.

Ideal candidates will be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment with a diverse team. They will understand that a sense of humor is a must, as is a willingness to learn new skills as organizers and leaders. We are seeking individuals who enjoy volunteer-driven community organizing and who take initiative. All our Fellows come from different backgrounds and walks of life, but they are all happily committed to engaging people in the Democratic process.

Dallas Sierra Club meeting May 12th

General Meeting Program - May 12, 7:00 pm - Refreshments at 6:30_

Movie Night! We will furnish popcorn, drinks, and snacks.

See Yosemite Through the Eyes of a Buffalo Soldier, a film featuring National Park Service Ranger Shelton Johnson as a 1903 Buffalo Soldier and his observations as one of the first "park rangers" to serve in Yosemite's vast wilderness. We see Yosemite through his eyes and feel his growing affection for this new world. The film blazes a trail to an important history that was nearly lost, and provides an opportunity to ride with the Buffalo Soldiers through the Range of Light.

This unique film by Emmy Award winning filmmaker Sterling Johnson provides a window to Yosemite's past, and was shot entirely in the Yosemite of today and yesterday. Jeff Southwick's musical compositions feature Shelton Johnson's spirited improvisations on Native American Flutes, providing a high note beneath which Southwick's lyrical explorations offer an inspired music score.

Ranger Shelton Johnson is an award winning and internationally known storyteller at Yosemite who is featured in Yosemite Theater as well as theater and television appearances nationally, including Ken Burns' film The National Parks: America's Best Idea. Click here for a 30 second trailer of the movie.

Everyone is welcome. You don't have to be a Sierra Club member. Just show up. We'd love to meet you.

Our General Meeting starts at 7:00 pm but come at 6:30 for snacks, information and fellowship. Our meeting takes place at Brookhaven College, Building H, 3939 Valley View Ln in Farmers Branch. Click over to our General Meeting page of our website for more information and a map.

ALERT - PARKING for TUESDAY'S GENERAL MEETING: Our usual parking area at Brookhaven is under construction. Not to worry, instead of parking in front of building H where our meeting is you'll park a little farther east in front of building S. Enter from Valley View Lane. Where you used to come to a 4 way stop you can now only turn right. Turn left into "P3" parking as soon as you can. You'll be in front of building S and our building H will be to your left. You can shorten the walk by cutting through building S, then turn left/west and follow the sidewalk to building H which is next door. See you there! It's not as bad as it sounds. Check out the campus map on our General Meeting page.

Garland, Texas is a hotbed for anti-Muslim bigotry

On Sunday, there was a shooting in Garland, Texas. Two men opened fire outside a Muslim caricature event hosted by anti-Muslim activist Pamela Geller, and were shot dead in response. One security officer was reportedly injured in the attack as well.

There are many unanswered questions about the shooting, and we don't know much about the identity of the perpetrators or their motivations  read on

Tarrant County Democratic Party Jim Wright Tribute Gala

The Tarrant County Democratic Party is privileged to extend to you an invitation to the inaugural Jim Wright Tribute Gala.

With the recent passing of Speaker Jim Wright, Tarrant County has lost one of its greatest heroes. A voice of progress and reason, we could always count on Mr. Wright to get the job done. For decades, Jim Wright fought tirelessly for his constituents and for all Americans.

Speaker Wright began his dedication to the United States first by serving as a bombardier in the Air Force during World War II. In 1954, he was elected to the United States House of Representatives, and continued to serve as a U.S. Congressman until he was elected Speaker of the House in 1987.

We would be honored to have you in attendance as we celebrate the life of a great man and true friend to the people of Tarrant County.

Former Speaker of the House James C. Wright  When: Friday, June 5th, 2015 from 7:00PM to 11:00PM

Where: Hilton Hotel  815 Main Street  Fort Worth, Texas 76102.

Tarrant County Democratic Party Statement on Passing of Speaker Jim Wright

FORT WORTH, TX - With the passing of Speaker Jim Wright, Fort Worth as well as all of America has lost one of its greatest and most devoted advocates. For decades, Speaker Wright worked tirelessly for the people of the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. His efforts resulted in the revitalization of the Fort Worth Stockyards, increased flood control of the Trinity River, and most notably the Wright Amendment.

Beginning with his service in the Air Force during WWII through his entire career in Congress and as Speaker of the House, Jim Wright proved to be a loyal and dedicated patriot, respected by all of those who served beside him.

A tireless voice for all Texans, Speaker Wright's passionate commitment to his constituents made him a hometown hero to many in Fort Worth. His voice will echo through the decades to come and will continue to ring to the lives he touched.

Our thoughts and prayers are with him and his family.

 Marijuana Law Reform

Texas just took a huge step toward ending the failed "war on drugs."     "Texas cannot afford to continue criminalizing tens of thousands of citizens for marijuana possession each year," Rep. Joe Moody, the bill's author.

TAKE ACTION

A marijuana decriminalization bill was approved in a House Committee this week. The bill (HB 507) would make possession of less than an ounce of weed a civil offense.

Tell your representative you support decriminalization.

This is a huge first step toward ending Texas' practice of targeting communities of color for low-level drug offenses. Blacks and whites use marijuana at roughly equal rates, yet blacks are almost four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession.

Wall Street Vampires

Paul Krugman

Last year the vampires of finance bought themselves a Congress. I know it's not nice to call them that, but I have my reasons, which I'll explain in a bit. For now, however, let's just note that these days Wall Street, which used to split its support between the parties, overwhelmingly favors the G.O.P. And the Republicans who came to power this year are returning the favor by trying to kill Dodd-Frank, the financial reform enacted in 2010.

Jon Stewart Takes On The 'Lone Star Lunatics' In Texas

The Daily Show's Jon Stewart opened his show this Monday with a look at the insanity we've seen from Texas in the news recently. First up was the shooting this weekend, at Pam Geller and her Islamophobic buddies' so-called "free speech" event in Garland, Tx., and Stewart reminding everyone that no matter how offensive these wingnuts are, it's not alright to shoot them

Texas law enforcement often doesn't mirror the communities it serves

A racial divide separates many Texas law enforcement agencies from the communities they protect.

A Reporting Texas analysis found that licensed peace officers - the men and women who enforce the law throughout the state - are disproportionately white. In many communities, the face of law enforcement doesn't look much different than it did before the Civil Rights Movement.
