ACLU: License plate scanners are everywhere, and in some Dallas-area cities, they're keeping everything they see

In January the Dallas City Council OK'd buying 28 automated license plate readers for the Dallas Police Department, and only one council member voted against it: Angela Hunt, who said collecting and keeping the data was "very troubling.

"We're simply maintaining their records because perhaps they may commit a crime or perhaps they have committed a crime we're not aware of," said Hunt, who has since left office due to term limits. read on

The Life and Death (and Life?) of the Party -Texas Monthly

Democrats once ruled Texas. Then came five decades of steady decline. Can Wendy Davis, the Castro brothers, and Team Obama's vaunted field operation return their party to power? And if they can't, can anyone?

"Somebody has to step up," Wendy Davis observed one evening in late May over drinks at the bar of the Four Seasons Hotel in Austin. "As long as the Democrats continue to buy into the same bullshit that some of the Republicans are saying-'Oh no, it's Texas, it's hopeless'-and continue to act like it won't happen for six, eight, twelve, sixteen years from now, that perpetuates the problem."

"So are you going to run for statewide office?" I asked.  read on

Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America's Police Forces

By Radley Balko

List Price:             $27.99

BUY HERE

The last days of colonialism taught America's revolutionaries that soldiers in the streets bring conflict and tyranny. As a result, our country has generally worked to keep the military out of law enforcement. But according to investigative reporter Radley Balko, over the last several decades, America's cops have increasingly come to resemble ground troops. The consequences have been dire: the home is no longer a place of sanctuary, the Fourth Amendment has been gutted, and police today have been conditioned to see the citizens they serve as another enemy.

Who Has Your Back? 2013

When you use the Internet, you entrust your conversations, thoughts, experiences, locations, photos, and more to companies like Google, AT&T and Facebook. But what do these companies do when the government demands your private information? Do they stand with you? Do they let you know what's going on?

In this annual report, the Electronic Frontier Foundation examined the policies of major Internet companies - including ISPs, email providers, cloud storage providers, location-based services, blogging platforms, and social networking sites - to assess whether they publicly commit to standing with users when the government seeks access to user data. The purpose of this report is to incentivize companies to be transparent about how data flows to the government and encourage them to take a stand for user privacy whenever it is possible to do so.

Everything's bigger in Texas ... and soon that'll include how far women have to go for health care

The extreme anti-abortion bill that Texas Republicans will be focused on ramming through in a second special session of the legislature would ban abortion at all but five clinics in the state thanks to a requirement that they be ambulatory surgical centers and that doctors providing abortions have admitting privileges at a local hospital.

Texas would drop from more than 40 clinics to five, located in just four of the enormous state's cities. So what would that mean for women in Texas? Well, Texas is a big state, stretching nearly 800 miles in each direction for a total of 268,581 square miles. And with abortion access restricted to four cities in the eastern half of the state:

Hundreds turn out to protest abortion restrictions

The gathering came as part of the National Day of Action that included similar rallies planned in several cities. The events were organized by the International Socialist Organization and other left-leaning community organizing groups. Also supporting the effort were abortion rights groups, including NARAL Pro-Choice Texas.

About 200 people, most protesting the restrictions, showed up amid rainy skies in downtown Dallas as well.

New York City Vs Texas - The Daily Show

Lewis Black Anti-Texas Ad (Full Version) - New York City Vs Texas - The Daily Show (ORIGINAL)

Lewis Black Anti-Texas Ad (Full Version) - New York City Vs Texas - The Daily Show

"The Daily Show's" Lewis Black is all riled up that Gov. Rick Perry's tour across America to lure businesses away from other states and into Texas has finally reached New York. But Black is prepared. In a hilarious PSA-style parody, Black fires back with an ad that extols the virtues of New York City. "People come here from all over the world. For the freedom to live as they choose, for the variety of cultures, but most of all for the fact that it's not Texas," he says. Then Lewis delivers a serious message for the gaffe-prone governor: "Don't mess with Texas? No, don't fuck with New York."
