"An Incredible Soul": Lawrence Lessig Remembers Aaron Swartz After Leading Cyberactivist's Suicide

Today we remember the pioneering computer programmer and cyber activist Aaron Swartz, who took his own life Friday at the age of 26. As a teenager, Swartz helped develop RSS, revolutionizing how people use the Internet, going on to co-own Reddit, now one of the world's most popular sites. He was also a key architect of Creative Commons and an organizer of the grassroots movement to defeat the controversial House Internet censorship bill, the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA), and the Senate bill, the PROTECT IP Act (PIPA). Swartz hanged himself just weeks before the start of a controversial trial. He was facing up to 35 years in prison for sneaking into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and downloading millions of articles provided by the subscription-based academic research service JSTOR. We hear Swartz in his own words and speak to Harvard Law School Professor Lawrence Lessig, a longtime mentor and friend. Watch/Listen/Read

Unconstitutional Texas Bill Would Make Enforcing Federal Gun Laws A Felony

Ian Millhiser, News Report: A Texas lawmaker says he plans to file the Firearms Protection Act, which would make any federal laws that may be passed by Congress or imposed by Presidential order which would ban or restrict ownership of semi-automatic firearms or limit the size of gun magazines illegal in the state.

Republican Rep. Steve Toth says his measure also calls for felony criminal charges to be filed against any federal official who tries to enforce the rule in the state. Strangely, Toth does not appear to question that his bill is unconstitutional. Rather, he told The Chad Hasty Show on Monday that his goal is to undermine the Constitution itself.

As Current TV vanishes, the progressive media talking heads that called the network home are left with  one major question: What's next?

What's next for each host professionally once Al Jazeera America takes the place of Current in millions of homes across the country? And, more broadly, what's next for progressive media after the failure of a network that positioned itself as the one-stop shop for left-wing news and talk on cable?

Inequality Is Holding Back the Recovery

By JOSEPH E. STIGLITZ
New York Times

The re-election of President Obama was like a Rorschach test, subject to many interpretations. In this election, each side debated issues that deeply worry me: the long malaise into which the economy seems to be settling, and the growing divide between the 1 percent and the rest - an inequality not only of outcomes but also of opportunity. To me, these problems are two sides of the same coin: with inequality at its highest level since before the Depression, a robust recovery will be difficult in the short term, and the American dream - a good life in exchange for hard work - is slowly dying.

Matt Taibbi & William Black on Bailout Secrets & How New Foreclosure Deal Spares Banks from Justice

Four years after the massive bailout that rescued Wall Street, we look at the state of the financial sector with Rolling Stone's Matt Taibbi and former financial regulator William Black. In a new article for Rolling Stone, Taibbi argues the government did not just bail out Wall Street, but also lied on the financial sector's behalf, calling unhealthy banks healthy and helping banks cover up how much aid they were getting. The government's approach to the banks came under new scrutiny this week after it reached an $8.5 billion settlement for improprieties in the wrongful foreclosures on millions of American homeowners, including flawed paperwork, robo-signing and wrongly modified loans. The settlement will end an independent review of all foreclosures, meaning the banks could be avoiding billions of dollars in further penalties, in addition to criminal prosecution. The 25 Biggest Progressive Victories in 2012

It wasn't all doom and gloom.

Progressives are rarely satisfied. It is part of our political DNA. There's so much injustice in the world, it's sometimes hard to feel that we're making progress. But as Chinese philosopher Laozi reminded us, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

As I document in my book, The 100 Greatest Americans of the 20th Century: A Social Justice Hall of Fame, the radical ideas of one generation are often the common sense of the next generation. One hundred years ago, ideas like Social Security, the minimum wage and women's suffrage were considered radical. Fifty years ago, most African-Americans in the South couldn't vote, few women were welcome in politics and many professions, and all but a handful of gays and lesbians were locked in the closet. In other words, if we take a long view, we can see that things do often change for the better, sometimes in big leaps, but usually in incremental stages.

The Mostly Solved Deficit Problem by Paul Krugman NYTimes

The vertical axis measures the projected ratio of federal debt to GDP. The blue line at the top represents the projected path of that ratio as of early 2011 - that is, before recent agreements on spending cuts and tax increases. This projection showed a rising path for debt as far as the eye could see.

Dallas church organizing another gun buy back program

Bruce Buchanan is proud of the collection of worn pistol grips that he keeps in an old manila envelope. Running the Stew Pot for Dallas' homeless is his profession but getting guns off the streets is his passion.

"Something as small as this would look like a toy pistol," he said, holding up a pair of white plastic grips that once adorned a small pistol.

Across the country, communities have held gun buy back programs in the wake of the Connecticut tragedy. Los Angeles recently collected 2,037 guns, including a grenade launcher.

Buchanan and a group of volunteers are putting together Dallas' first since the tragedy, which is designed for gun owners who no longer want weapons but don't know what to do with them.

"We need to make communities and families safer and we try to do it one gun at a time," he said.

It's scheduled for 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 19 outside The Stew Pot at 1822 Young Street. Organizers will pay $50 cash for working handguns and rifles and $200 for semi-automatic assault rifles.

Buchanan's other buy backs over the years have collected 500 weapons. Even with the astonishing demand for guns right now, Buchanan said he thinks this still makes a difference.

"To know a family that has lost a child to an accidental gun death and you know that taking one gun away from a shoe box in the back of a closet makes a big difference," he said.

Metal components of weapons get destroyed but Buchanan saves pistol grips as mementos for financial donors who help pay for the program.

Stop Governor Perry's Attack on Women's Health Care Rights!

Last year, Republican Governor Rick Perry signed a reprehensible law forcing a woman seeking an abortion to undergo a mandatory invasive ultrasound--a procedure that the New York Times calls "patronizing and humiliating."

It's outrageous! Governor Perry and the Republican held legislature are holding women's rights hostage in order to promote their own divisive social agenda.

Women should be allowed to make their own health decisions. Use the form to the right to stand with the DGA and demand Rick Perry roll back this repugnant legislation attacking women's health and women's rights.
