Lockdown on the Pipeline: How a Houston Businessman Helped Shut Down Keystone for a Day

Tar Sands Blockade activists halted Keystone XL construction for a full day on August 28 after locking themselves to a truck carrying pipes in Livingston, Texas.

As Hurricane Isaac made landfall in New Orleans on the eve of Hurricane Katrina's seventh anniversary, climate justice organizers in Texas were locking themselves to the axle of a massive TransCanada truck carrying 36-inch pipes intended for Keystone XL construction, in hopes that they might turn the climate crisis around.

Four activists were locked to the truck Tuesday, with two providing direct support-that is, up until the point of their arrest. Fortunately enough, TransCanada workers stepped in to fill their shoes by bringing water to the blockaders throughout the afternoon.

Whistleblower Brad Birkenfeld Rewarded Record $104M for Exposing How UBS Helped Rich Evade Taxes

The IRS has announced a record $104 million reward to a whistleblower who exposed the largest tax evasion scheme in U.S. history. Former UBS AG banker Brad Birkenfeld first reported in 2007 that he and his colleagues had encouraged rich Americans to store more than $20 billion in offshore Swiss bank accounts and cheat the IRS. But after coming forward, Birkenfeld was prosecuted and convicted of conspiracy and sentenced to prison. Following Birkenfeld's release last month, on Tuesday the IRS vindicated his actions with the largest amount ever awarded under its whistleblower program. We're joined by Stephen Kohn, an attorney for Birkenfeld and executive director of the National Whistleblowers Center. Watch/Listen/Read

Infiltrating Occupy: Austin Activists Face Charges for Equipment Provided by Undercover Police

As Occupy Wall Street prepares to mark its first anniversary, members of Occupy Austin have discovered that their arrests on felony charges after a protest last December are directly linked to equipment provided by a police detective who infiltrated their group. The activists locked arms inside tubes made of PVC pipe that the police had designed, constructed and dropped off for the protest. We're joined from Austin by Ronnie Garza, one of the members of Occupy Austin facing felony charges stemming from the December protest, and from Houston by Greg Gladden, National Lawyers Guild member and past president of the Texas American Civil Liberties Union.  It's time for Carnaval de Paz!

Create a little peace where you can

6-9 p.m., Friday, September 21, 2012 /Rahr & Sons Brewing Company

The Center for the Healing Arts in Fort Worth hosts its second annual Carnaval de Paz, a peace carnival and celebration of International Day of Peace.

The Carnaval de Paz welcomes anyone, at any age, looking to have fun while supporting the idea of peace in the home, schools and community. Rahr & Sons will create a special Peace Brew for the event, and the crowd better arrive hungry, as Chadra Mezza will be on hand to serve pizza and other snacks. Kids will especially love the cotton candy machine and specialty popcorn. An old-fashioned cake walk gives guests a chance to take home a handmade cake, as well.

Come out and hula hoop while listening to the sounds of Vanillaface Jones. Palm-reading, face-painting and an opportunity to learn The Peace Dance by Lori Sundeen Soderbergh will also be happening. Guests, families, and friends can have pictures taken in a 10-12 person photo booth, too.

New and special this year: Guests can buy artworks illustrating the theme "Imagine Non-Violence," created by Fort Worth elementary school students in a project organized by The Safe City Commission. The artists will be on hand to comment on their works at the Carnaval de Paz.

This fun evening celebrates the International Day of Peace (September 21), an occasion important to the Center for Healing Arts, a wellness center with acupuncture and massage therapy in Fort Worth's medical district. Most of the proceeds from the Carnaval de Paz will go to the Safe City Commission (www.safecitycommission.org) and Peace Alliance (www.thepeacealliance.org)

Tickets are $25 and sold at the door; ages 6 to 21 will pay $10 each.

Rahr & Sons is at 701 Galveston Avenue, Fort Worth TX 76104.

500 Days: Secrets and Lies in the Terror Wars

By Kurt Eichenwald

List Price: $30.00
Price:$17.85 & eligible for FREE Super Saver Shipping on orders over $25.

Kurt Eichenwald-New York Times bestselling author of Conspiracy of Fools and The Informant- recounts the first 500 days after 9/11 in a comprehensive, compelling page-turner as gripping as any thriller.

In 500 Days, master chronicler Kurt Eichenwald lays bare the harrowing decisions, deceptions, and delusions of the eighteen months that changed the world forever, as leaders raced to protect their citizens in the wake of 9/11.

Eichenwald's gripping, immediate style and trueto- life dialogue puts readers at the heart of these historic events, from the Oval Office to Number 10 Downing Street, from Guantanamo Bay to the depths of CIA headquarters, from the al-Qaeda training camps to the torture chambers of Egypt and Syria. He reveals previously undisclosed information from the terror wars, including never before reported details about warrantless wiretapping, the anthrax attacks and investigations, and conflicts between Washington and London.

500 Days: Author Kurt Eichenwald's New Account of How Bush Admin Ignored Warnings Before 9/11

Newly disclosed documents provide further evidence the administration of George W. Bush ignored repeated warnings about Osama bin Laden's plans to attack the United States. In 500 Days: Secrets and Lies in the Terror Wars, author and journalist Kurt Eichenwald fleshes out how the Bush administration dismissed a number of warnings of an al-Qaeda attack against the United States beginning in the spring of 2001, instead focusing on alleged threats from Saddam Hussein in Iraq. Burnt Orange Report Interviews John Iadarola of The Young Turks

Many modern progressives swear by The Young Turks, an online progressive talk show that is now also on Current TV. I am among those progressives.

The Young Turks is hosted by Cenk Uygur, an apologetically aggressive progressive, who tells the real story of politics daily alongside many other excellent members of the LA-based TYT crew: co-host Ana Kasparian, Michael Shure, Ben Manciewicz, Wes Clark Jr., and new TYT talker John Iadarola. The Young Turks' is the quintessential American Internet Dream: they have built a massive online audience (their YouTube channel has over 797 million views) because they are an excellent alternative to the mainstream press, which is so often more concerned with appearing balanced than telling the truth.

John Iadarola, who calls Austin his favorite city, appears on the online show frequently, and co-hosts another one of TYT's shows (there are many): TYT University, where John and Lisa Ferguson, a reporter and producer for Current TV, talk college news and give tips and tricks for students. John initially drew the attention of TYT when he started submitting videos about college while a graduate student at UT.

Hating on Ben Bernanke by Paul Krugman  NY Times

Last week Ben Bernanke, the Federal Reserve chairman, announced a change in his institution's recession-fighting strategies. In so doing he seemed to be responding to the arguments of critics who have said the Fed can and should be doing more. And Republicans went wild.

Fred R. Conrad/The New York Times

Now, many people on the right have long been obsessed with the notion that we'll be facing runaway inflation any day now. The surprise was how readily Mitt Romney joined in the craziness.

CNN and Facebook launch 'Election Insights

CNN and Facebook's partnership for the election continues to unveil new products. The news giant and the publicly-traded social platform have just unveiled "Election Insights", a real-time visualization that illustrates which candidates are being discussed the most on Facebook. We spoke with Mass Relevance (the social TV company powering the visualization) CEO Sam Decker about the app.

An interesting part about the Insights product is that it "will be used during CNN broadcasts, including regular segments on CNN's 'The Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer' as well as in CNN.com and CNN Mobile campaign coverage," the cable network explains. Back in 2008, the big Facebook election activation was the communal "like" to say that you voted - which has been updated with a new "I'm Voting" app on Facebook. It's all part of CNN's across-the-board Facebook partnership this year.

FBI Clears Halliburton Crew in Loss of Radioactive Tool

Austin National Guard team joins FBI, locals in hunt for radioactive drilling rod 14 Sep 2012 Halliburton Co. crew members who lost a radioactive rod used in drilling wells in West Texas weren't guilty of criminal conduct, the Federal Bureau of Investigation said as a hunt for the tool entered a fourth day. FBI officials working with the Texas Department of Transportation questioned three employees who were unable to locate the device this week after it went missing on a 130-mile (209-kilometer) route from Pecos to Odessa, according to a Nuclear Regulatory Commission incident report today. News from the North Texas Progressive

North Texas Progressive Newsletter
...bringing North Texas news and discussion since 2004

September 10,  2012

Dear nancy,

Good Afternoon!

Oh my gosh, what a jam- packed newsletter this week it took me hours and hours to put this together ! More on that later !

There is just so much going on right now - please check out the calendar section too ! One of the things that important to me at NTXProgressive is to cross geographic boundaries. Clubs and groups are set up by cities and counties BUT they welcome everyone to attend . If you live or work in one place and would like to attend in another , you can do that and you would be welcomed. So please, always check out events all over the area,  as much as we all drive we know it's no problem to attend a great speaker or event a few miles away and just know you are invited to do that !!

We progressives,  are famous for having a big tent and I think sometimes it's so big we can't see each other on the other side of the tent - for example look at what the Sierra club is doing this week. ( check calendar)

Finally , we have launched our fall raffle/ fundraiser. This is how we pay the costs associated with getting this newsletter out weekly to thousands in North Texas . I don't have annoying fundraisers all the time,  or beg you and make you feel guilty and most importantly I NEVER say no to groups and organization that want to post their events and have us help them get the word out , even if they have no advertising budgets or can't offer to sponsor . So twice a year, the way we do it is I offer you amazing prizes and you buy chances to win by buying $20 raffle tickets. PLEASE do that today !

See list of prizes below ( you won't believe them !) and use Paypal or Email me for the mailing address.

Thanks,

Nancy Cunningham

Obama Election Call Party

So on September 15 and 16, we're launching the program with a twist-teaming up with the labor movement to win in 2012. We're leading a cutting-edge program with AFL-CIO affiliate Workers' Voice to mobilize voters who supported President Obama four years ago but who might not vote this November.

At hundreds of call parties, we'll gather to enjoy good company and hit the phones to ask our fellow MoveOn members, in states like Florida and Ohio, to volunteer to let voters know what's at stake if they don't get to the polls. This strategy relies on members like you to open up your home so that folks in Dallas have a place to get together and make calls.

Can you host so that MoveOn members in Dallas have a place to make calls on September 15 or 16?

Yes, I can host a call party!

I can't host, but I can make calls from my computer!

People Don't Vote When No One Asks Them To ( NY Times)

The Democrats selected Julián Castro, the mayor of San Antonio, to deliver the keynote address at their national convention - the same honor that propelled State Senator Barack Obama into the national spotlight just eight years ago - as part of its courtship of Latino voters, whom the President needs to vote in large numbers if he wants to be re-elected. As it happens, as the campaign manager for a young, outsider candidate for San Antonio's city council in 2011, I learned something simple but crucial: while younger Latinos are increasingly the focus of national political strategists, they are still largely ignored at the local level. read on

"Effective Evil" or Progressives' Best Hope? Glen Ford vs. Michael Eric Dyson on Obama Presidency

As President Obama accepts the Democratic nomination to seek four more years in the White House, we host a debate on his presidency with Glen Ford of Black Agenda Report and Michael Eric Dyson, professor at Georgetown University and author of numerous books. Ford calls Obama the "more effective evil" for embracing right-wing policies and neutralizing effective opposition, while Dyson argues Obama provides the best and obvious choice for progressive change within the confines of the U.S. political system. Rep. John Lewis, Civil Rights Icon, on Re-Electing Obama and Fighting to Protect the Vote

Among the speakers on the closing night of the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte on Thursday was the legendary civil rights activist and Georgia Rep. John Lewis. During the 1960s, Lewis was arrested more than 40 times and beaten almost to death as he served as chair of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee, marched side by side with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., helped organize the Freedom Rides, campaigned for Robert Kennedy's presidential bid and spoke at the 1963 March on Washington. Ex-Mich. Gov. Jennifer Granholm: "In Romney's World, Cars Get the Elevator, Workers Get the Shaft"

Among the more attention-grabbing speeches on the closing night of the Democratic National Convention Thursday was a rousing address by former Michigan Governor Jennifer Granholm. "How did [Romney] make that fortune? And at whose expense?" Granholm told the crowd. "You know, too often, he made it at the expense of middle-class Americans. Year after year, it was profit before people." Watch/Listen/Read

September 14, 2012 * 6:00 - 8:30 pm

Fort Worth Community Arts Center /1300 Gendy St. * Fort Worth, TX 76107

With special guest speaker: Chuck RochaWith thanks to our 2012 Roadmap to Victory SponsorBobby Patton andEmmy Award Winners: Dick & Julie Abrams

An evening reception with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres from 6-7, from 7-8:30 we will have comments from our Chairman Steve Maxwell, and few surprise guests- followed by special guest Chuck Rocha.

As seen on the Ed Show, as well as many other cable news programs. He currently serves on the board of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute and the Labor Council for Latin American Advancement and is an advisor to the Young Democrats of America.

Born and raised in Tyler, Texas, Chuck Rocha followed in his father's footsteps as a union worker for the Springfield Tire Company and a member of United Rubber Workers Local 746.

Chuck is a graduate of the Harvard University Trade Union program.  In 2009, Chuck launched The Latino Project of the American Worker: "We're the only partisan vehicle out there doing Spanish and English advertising talking about the differences between the parties on these core issues. We're encouraging Hispanics to get out and vote because their economic security is at stake."

When asked about the Dream Act and the Presidents Executive Order, Mr. Rocha commented, "What president Barack Obama did was very smart. It wasn't political because these 800,000 people can't cast the first vote for him. What it did was mobilize and energize people like me who is Latino who is registered to vote..."

Ed Schultz has called him, "one of the best Latino voices and advocates in the country."

Chuck has been in big demand lately with cable news organizations from MSNBC to Fox News inviting him to talk about political issues important to the Latino community.

Texas Democrats hope Julian Castro can turn the state blue

LuAnne Leonard hopes the nation is getting a new impression of Texas.

For so long, she said, Republican Gov. Rick Perry has been the face of the state, especially during his failed presidential bid that ended early this year.

But now that San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro captured national attention for his Democratic National Convention keynote address this week, Leonard, a 45-year-old delegate from Cleburne, hopes people are looking at Texas in a different light.

Five Ways Courts Say Texas Discriminated Against Black and Latino Voters

How does Texas discriminate against minority voters? Federal judges counted the ways. Last Tuesday, a panel of federal court judges ruled that new district maps drawn by Texas' Republican-controlled legislature weakened the influence of Latino voters and in some cases evinced "discriminatory intent" against both Latinos and African Americans. Two days later, another panel of federal judges unanimously struck down a voter-ID law passed by the legislature in March 2011, arguing that it would disproportionately harm African-American and Latino voters. Obstruct and Exploit By PAUL KRUGMAN

Does anyone remember the American Jobs Act? A year ago President Obama proposed boosting the economy with a combination of tax cuts and spending increases, aimed in particular at sustaining state and local government employment. 10 Contemporary Politicians' Favorite Books

After it was revealed that Paul Ryan was a longtime Ayn Rand fanboy, reporters, critics, and the general public had a literary field day. Out came in-depth analyses of how Ryan's fiscal policies were akin to Randian philosophies, and what character he would play in Atlas Shrugged. It all got us thinking about other political candidates and their literary preferences. Usually politicians are the ones who are being written about in books, not talking about them. So is Obama still as big of a fan of poetry as he was in his college days? Which classic novel for young ladies has a beloved spot on Hillary's bookshelf? After the jump, we take a stroll through some contemporary politicos' favorite reads.

Google's Politics & Elections hub

Google's Politics & Elections hub. The two aspects of Google's Politics & Elections hub that I fond most interesting are the "Trends" and "Insights."

In the Trends section you can see graphs and heatmaps depicting fluctuations in the number of searches for Presidential candidate's names over the last eleven months. In the Insights section you will find the results of surveys about issues and candidates.

September 2012 is "Hunger Action" month and the North Texas Food Bank

September 2012 is "Hunger Action" month and the North Texas Food Bank wants everyone to get in on the action. Participants can contribute in numerous ways - advocating and raising awareness, making a donation or giving time and energy at an event.

There are always events and organizations that are partnering up with the North Texas Food Bank, but one of the biggest ones is the State Fair of Texas. The State Fair will begin on Friday, September 28 and anyone that brings three cans of food will get into the state fair for only $2.

People can also show their support for the North Texas Food Bank by purchasing a North Texas Food Bank shirt for $30 or a North Texas Food Bank tote bag for $20. Purchasing the shirt would provide 90 meals for those in need while buying the bag would provide 60.

The North Texas Food Bank has been in existence since 1982 and has always strived to address the critical issue of hunger in the North Texas area. Every day, the North Texas Food Bank provides access to 90,000 nutritious meals. However, to adequately feed the homeless population on North Texas, over 300,000 meals are needed.

Texas ACLU Questions for every candidate

Here is a list of questions every candidate should answer.

All 15 seats on the Texas State Board of Education are up for grabs on November 6. Who wins will determine what the next generation of public school students in Texas will learn about evolution, social studies, sex education and other subjects.

Voters may be focused on the presidential race and top-of-ballot contests like the U.S. Senate race, but there's a lot more to consider when you vote your way through to the bottom.

Search local community event listings to find a candidates forum near you. A candidates forum allows voters to find how candidates stand on important issues.

Ask these important questions to learn the civil liberties beliefs of the candidates.

OFA First Political Campaign in History to Accept Text Message Donations"

SOCIAL 2012 - "OFA First Political Campaign in History to Accept Text Message Donations" - Obama release: "Following FEC advisory opinions issued in June and August, supporters with mobile phones on supported carriers will now be able to text 'GIVE' to 62262, OFA's text short code, to quickly make small contributions, not exceeding $50 during any billing cycle for most carriers. 'Grassroots giving is powering this campaign,' said OFA Campaign Manager Jim Messina. 'Since April 2011, more than 2.7 million people have pitched in to own a piece of the President's campaign, and last month 98 percent of donors gave less than $250.' ...

"The service will begin for Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile and U.S. Cellular customers starting this week, and with other carriers, including AT&T, anticipated to approve in the near future. ... OFA intends to promote this convenient new avenue of small-dollar donations when supporters are most likely to take out their mobile phones to contribute. For instance, a video screen at a grassroots event with President Obama could flash a message such as, 'To contribute $10 to Obama for America, text GIVE to 62262.
