The New Pentagon Papers: WikiLeaks Releases 90,000+ Secret Military Documents Painting Devastating Picture of Afghanistan War

It's one of the biggest leaks in US military history. More than 90,000 internal records of US military actions in Afghanistan over the past six years have been published by the whistleblower website WikiLeaks. The documents provide a devastating portrait of the war in Afghanistan, revealing how coalition forces have killed hundreds of civilians in unreported incidents, how a secret black ops special forces unit hunts down targets for assassination or detention without trial, how Taliban attacks have soared, and how Pakistan is fueling the insurgency. We host a roundtable discussion with independent British journalist Stephen Grey; Pentagon Papers whistleblower, Daniel Ellsberg; former State Department official in Afghanistan, Matthew Hoh; independent journalist Rick Rowley; and investigative historian Gareth Porter.

COUNTDOWN TO ZERO is coming to Dallas

COUNTDOWN TO ZERO traces the history of the atomic bomb from its origins to the present state of global affairs: nine nations possessing nuclear weapons capabilities with others racing to join them, with the world held in a delicate balance that could be shattered by an act of terrorism, failed diplomacy, or a simple accident. Written and directed by acclaimed documentarian Lucy Walker (The Devil's Playground, Blindsight), the film features an array of important international statesmen, including President Jimmy Carter, Mikhail Gorbachev, Pervez Musharraf and Tony Blair. It makes a compelling case for worldwide nuclear disarmament, an issue more topical than ever with the Obama administration working to revive this goal today. The film was produced by Academy Award® winner and current nominee Lawrence Bender (Inglourious Basterds, An Inconvenient Truth) and developed, financed and executive produced by Participant Media, together with World Security Institute. Participant collaborated with Magnolia on last year's Food, Inc., recently nominated for an Academy Award®, and the upcoming CASINO JACK and the United States of Money. Jeff Skoll, Diane Weyermann, Bruce Blair and Matt Brown are the film's executive producers.

Kiss This War Goodbye
By FRANK RICH NYT

IT was on a Sunday morning, June 13, 1971, that The Times published its first installment of the Pentagon Papers. Few readers may have been more excited than a circle of aspiring undergraduate journalists who'd worked at The Harvard Crimson. Though the identity of The Times's source wouldn't eke out for several days, we knew the whistle-blower had to be Daniel Ellsberg, an intense research fellow at M.I.T. and former Robert McNamara acolyte who'd become an antiwar activist around Boston. We recognized the papers' contents, as reported in The Times, because we'd heard the war stories from the loquacious Ellsberg himself.

Populist Jim Hightower concludes DPC lecture series

Populist Jim Hightower concludes DPC lecture series

The Dallas Peace Center will conclude its three-part Summer Dinner Lecture Series with the humor and insights of Jim Hightower, "America's most popular populist." He will speak on Thursday, August 19, at the Irving Arts Center, 3333 North MacArthur Blvd., in Irving. The reception is at 6:00 p.m. and the program is at 7:00 p.m.

Hightower broadcasts daily commentaries that are carried in more than 150 radio stations and on the web. Each month, he publishes the newsletter, The Hightower Lowdown, which now has more than 135,000 subscribers and is the fastest growing political publication in America. In his latest book, Swim Against The Current: Even A Dead Fish Can Go With The Flow, he and cohort Susan DeMarco introduce readers to people across the country who have questioned authority, trusted their values, sought alternative ways of doing things and stood up for their beliefs - and come through it all doing good and doing well.

Hightower cut his teeth in Texas politics as a legislative aide to Sen. Ralph Yarborough. He co-founded the Agribusiness Accountability Project, a public interest project that focused on corporate power in the food economy, was editor of the Texas Observer and served as Texas Agriculture Commissioner for two terms.

The event will benefit the Dallas Peace Center, a nonprofit organization that, for 29 years has promoted education, dialogue and action for peace and justice. Reservations are $35 per person, or $325 for groups of 10. To purchase tickets, go to www.DallasPeaceCenter.orgor call 214-823-7793.
